I have a 90HP Mercury two-stroke outboard that has been used very little (less than 10 hours) in the last 18 months. It has been stored in an unheated barn over the winter and not started since last October.

Will it be okay if I simply change the gear lube and fill-up with fresh gas before starting it up and using it like normal? Or, would I be better off having a certified mechanic take a look at it and giving it a “full inspection”?

Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Well, if you have to ask.....maybe best to take it to the mechanic?

Maybe a compromise would be to obtain a set of 'muffs'. You attach a hose to them and fit them over the water impeller intake on the outboard and you can start the motor in your driveway and see if it presents any problems. A lot depends on what you did pre-storage: fuel stabilizer, fogging oil, fresh gearcase lube?

Should you decide to take it directly to the lake, please launch at a spot that's not too busy and be sure the motor starts and runs before pulling the boat off the trailer. No way would I take it directly into a river current situation until I was certain it will stay running. m
