We'll be heading up to Canyon Lake and staying at McIntosh Lodge for the opener in a couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone knows the water level this year?

I know it's been down the last couple of years, I'm hoping it's either maintained or gone up.

As for muskie fishing, I've never fished Canada this early in the season, are there any differences than fishing late July early August?

Are the fish more on the shores this early or are they typically in the deeper dropoffs?

Has anyone else stayed at McIntosh Lodge recently and if so please share you experiences there. You can reply here or email me at [email protected].

Any information would be helpful, thanks in advance.

McIntosh is a nice lodge, stayed there twice. I did well burning (really fast) small baby boo tails, twitching 6" grandmas/jakes, and black 7" hawg wobblers were deadly. I also had a lot of fish come on 6" bull dawgs and tiger tubes. Some other guys had some success using 6" depth raiders.

Really good Lake for numbers of fish, 4 fish day is fairly common (depending on weather) my best day was 7 fish on that lake and I screwed up some on top of it.

On the opener and following week I had most my success fishing the shorelines in the bays, and any shallow weedy areas at the backs of them, one fish came off a rock wall but it wasn't our best method. Theres fish literally from right off McIntoshs' dock all the way to where the lake ends. If you'd like any other specific information feel free to PM me or email me at [email protected]

I've fished canyon lake many times and also stayed at MacIntosh usally around the 4th of July.Mac's is really a nice camp,John is a great guy,he will be honest about the conditions when you get there. The muskie fishing is good lots of numbers not as many throphies as LOTW or Eagle lake but Ive seen fish in the upper 50in range. The best bait is a distressed walleye on your line!! Only half kidding when jigging for eyes on the reefs muskies tend to hit them when they are hooked.I like to use crank baits around the islands and the reefs preferably walleye pattern.Sunken timber is also a holding spot for skies especially in the back of canyon bay (before the narrows). Then there is the tried and true bucktails Mepps black and orange musky killers.Top water is deadly Jackpots and Knuckle heads. The good news is that the lake is up from the past couple of years.Ican hardly wait until until July 10th when I'll be at mac's.

Thanks gentlemen for the advice. I really appreciate it.

Has anyone tried trolling Canyon ever? If so where have you tried it and was it successful?

I did five years ago, I went under the bridge where the railroad trachers are and trolled along the left shore line as you get into that long arm. My wife caught a 36 muskie in close to twenty feet of water with a small rapala. Also we had some nice follows by the falls at the end of that arm with buck tails. I'm going up again in August for the first time in four years so it will be nice to hear what is going on.

We caught a couple of skys near those rapids...the first one was from bind a rock, at first I thought that I was snagged on a log. I started to horse it in when about half way to the boat it finally decied to put a a fight. We got it into one of the rubber walleye nets and it formed almost a perfect U. We picked up the second one to the left of the those rapids about 10 minutes later. Both were between 30-40 inches.
