What rod weight are you guys using for muskie and pike? What flies are productive? Floating or sinking line? What about leader and tippet material?

I have recently fell in love with fly fishing and I'm going to take my game up a notch and hopefully get to do some pike and muskie fishing this summer.

Thanks to all that reply.

A few years ago I used to do some flyfishing for Northerns here in Norway. Rod of choice was a 7 or 8 class rod (depends on the size of your flies), with fast action. I used both sinking and floating lines. An effective technique was heavy sinking line, and a floating kind of fly. This way you fish just over the bottom, effective for bottom dwelling spring pikes. Floating line and popper flies works for active summerpikes.
Do you tie your own flies? Both big flash flies and rappit strips flies have worked well here.

I only dabble in this aspect of Musky fishing, but I have been dabbling for thirty years.

You may get by with an 8 weight, but a 9 weight is the way to go. Those bunny flys soak up a lot of water and a 9 weight will handle them.

I use a WF floating for casting shallow weeds and weed flats. For weed edges I use a Teeny T-200 which will get you down 6-8 feet.

My best advise is to borrow from the library or buy, a book titled "Pike on the Fly". It's still in print and probably the best compilation on the subject. He has some good standard fly patterns in there too.

I never tried it for musky but I did do alot of pike fishing in canada. I have a 8 weight rod but I would get a 9 if I did it all over again. I was fishing late summer over weeds anywhere from 3 feet to 12. I used floating line and a 9 inch bucktail streamer fly. These big lures are a little tricky to throw but manegable. There is a powder you can buy to keep the flies from taking on to much water, they are almost imposible to throw when they are soaked. I cant remember the name of it but any fly shop will have it, its like baby powder.
Good luck and hang on, it's lots of fun.

9 inch stremers!!! Wow. I have never even seen a nine inch streamer. They probably don't even have that at my local shops!!
