| I boat a used boat three years ago, and it has never started on the first try. It usually takes three or four attempts before it will turn over. Then it takes a couple more attempts just to keep it running. Could this be a problem with the spark plugs?
Once it starts for the first time each day, it continues to start and run well for the rest of the day.
Is this a fixable problem, or is it just an old motor? I have a 1987 Evinrude 40 HP tiller.
Thanks,

| Couple of things I would check into:
1. Check the plugs/replace. Check the gap...it should be .030
2. Check the timing. If the timing is off by a little, the engine will not start as well, but may run somewhat well.
3. Run a decarbonizer through the engine. This will clean out any gunk that may be constricting fuel flow.
These are just a couple of things to check out...
The motor should not take 4-5 tries to get it going cold, unless you are not going to high idle before you start...
Good luck!!

| Thanks for the tip. I will probably get the boat tuned up this spring. I don't know anything about motors, so I am worthless.
I'll have them check everything you guys mentioned.
Thanks for visiting my website.
