I have a 16 foot Tuffy Esox with a 50 lbs 12V MotorGuide bow mount trolling motor. I use 2 batteries wired together with a Guest 2-bank on-board charger. I have problems in strong winds with this set up. Does anyone else run a similar boat with a 12V motor? Is this a lbs thrust issue, does a Minn Kota 55 PowerDrive AutoPilot deliver significantly more thrust to enable me to make some speed into the wind? The MotorGuide I have is a 12V/24V model; would I get better performance if I wired the boat for 24V? Just looking for a few additional heads to help in the decision whether to get new motor, new batteries, or re-wire the boat.

Thanks,
Oly

I'd look at the MotorGuide in 24Volt since that's on the boat and won't cost you much to try. Also, look into the power prop for that motor, might help if you are not currently running one.

by Power Prop do you mean the 2 blade standard prop or are you referring to some special order prop?

I have a 65# 24 Volt Minnkota Powerdrive on my 17ft Tuffy Deep V and it easily handles the big water. With my deeper hull I also have the 60" shaft so the prop won't come out of the water. Better to go big than too small IMHO.

I run a 12v 42 lb. Minn Kota Auto Pilot on my 17' Esox, and don't have much issue. When in doubt, upgrade to something with more juice... especially if you already have the batteries in place.

I have a 17' Tuffy Esox Magnum and have a 24V 48 Lb. Thrust Minn Kota bow mounted trolling motor. The 10 year old motor is showing her age but I've never had any issues with power even in good, solid, stiff winds.

Let me know if I can help with anything else.
