Hello,
I am new to Muskie fishing and even newer to message boards.

After much thought, I made the decision to purchase the Abu Garcia 6601SSC3 as my one and only Muskie reel. I opened the box today to find a 6601C4 in the SSC3 box. So, I contacted the customer service department of the store and they told me that the C4 is the same as the SSC3 only better. They also told me that Abu Garcia no longer makes the SSC3.

Is the SSC3 the same reel as the C4? Do they still make the SSC3?

After a few minutes or research, it would seem that the C4 is heavier, a different color (not a concern), and is geared higher then the SSC3.

Thanks for your help,
Corey

The SSC3 and the C4 are not the same reel by any means.

I wouldn't say the C4 is better by any means. I have 5 SSC3 and LOVE them. You are right, the SSC3's gearing is lower and can handle just about any bait you can throw. The C4 is NOT a bucktail real by any means. The high speed of keeping a bucktail running is too much for the gearing in the C4 and would blow out quite easily. The C4 would be used for baits such as jerk baits, glide baits, and top water.

Now as far as them still making the SSC3, I do not know for sure, if they discontinued the reel, it would have been just recently.

Thank you. I thought I purchaced this reel from a reputable dealer, but I think I may have been mistaken. I think i'm going to return this tomorrow. Although at some point i may find that i like jerk baits, glide baits, and top water -- it is not what i had planed on starting out throwing.

By the way if i do find the SSC3 should i tear it down, clean, and oil before taking it out? I keep seeing and hearing that new reels are packed with to much greese. Would you agree?

The SSC4 also has one bearing more, it sits on one side of the wormshaft. That and the gearing is the only difference. If you cant get a hold of a ssc3 you can quite easily change the gears on the c4 so it has the lower ration, as the c3.
Regarding "shopshelf grease" I'd say yes, clean it up

We just got a shipment in of them at Scheels in Des Moines...We sell a pretty good amount of them too and it is the reel I reccommend to people who want an all around muskie reel...
