Ok, how many people had red stained hands today from the new red PowerPro? It looked like I soaked my hands in beet juice for a day. I still have some staining after repeated washing even with Go Jo. I knew this would happen, but I didn't think it was going to be this bad. My cork on one of my rods is basically pink now too.

I should have taken the advice I got and stuck with the green. Not only are my hands red, but the cork on my new rod is a nice shade of pink and my shoes are full of it from the dripping. Hopefully it comes out eventually...Ive washed my hands a bunch of times and still cant get it all out.

You had to go ahead and get me started ...

I have been using a spool of #80 Red Phantom for a few weeks now, and it still bleeds red. I stopped using Power Pro completely two years ago because the line bled green and stained my fiberglass McKee Craft so badly it took hours of scrubbing to get it off.

The red came off of the vinyl decks of my Cresliner easy enough, but Musky fishing is enough work, and I'll be darned if I am going to clean up after the line. This time I thought I'd give the red a try (maybe something was different ... but it was not).

I don't care how good their line is. I switched to Cortland Bronzeback or Tuff Line Plus. Those dyes are for the birds.
The issue really is a nuisance for me.

I had to laugh out loud at the first post... the resason for the red is because at a certain depth the red becomes invisible. Personally i dont think it works. I been using power pro for 5 years now and i got no complaints. I was suprised to hear that you had green bleeding from the line... i never seen that before.

The ad says the the red "disappears" What they don't tell you that, it turns black.

And it does work, probably just as good as white line, black line, green line, yellow line, bronze line, etc.

For those how have red hands, just tell folks you went to a physic and had your palm "red". Get it????

thats a good one musky! nut,
I had green power pro bleed also, turns #*^@ near white after a few weeks. I never heard that red turns black after a few feet in the water, i heard it Disappears though, and that made me think about all the red on my so called bleeding gills lures and lures with alot of red on them, hows a fish see it ? if they (fish) just hit by vibration only, why not use clear lures with sound chambers...just my opinion, it may be stupid but it's the only one i got.

if red is invisible under a certian depth, are gilss and anal pores invisible on a perch or any other fish invisble? food for thought.

Red is invisible in water????

What FISH or Muskie told you this???

Anybody ever use a red and white Daredevil?? Fish love them....

My hottest bulldowg is the Red and white one,(in clearer water)

The spinner bait and Bucktail with alot of red in it gets bit pretty often compared to other colored baits. (except orange)

The white colored line makes more sense to me as being stealth.

What color are most fishes bottoms? White, and white blends into the water column pretty easy..... I don't think the aggressive fish even notice the line, they are looking or keying in on the lure(food)

Most muskies feed looking up,(except fish in 1-3 ft. of water) They are not going to pay attention to the color of your line.

Remember , fish have a brain the size of a pea....... duh......duh.....

Red does not become "invisible" beyond a certain depth...

It just stops appearing red. Most likely takes on a gray/brown tinge.

Top, and Esox,
I was not saying (or meaning) that red becomes invisible. I was mocking the idea that some beleive it does. Red, imho, = easy prey. Please forgive me when my posts are taken wrong (or, I didn't think the whiskey would hit me so quickly, lol).

Red does not become invisible, or disappear under water. It is the first one to lose it's color when submerged in water. That is not to say it becomes invisible, though. There was a pretty good discussion on this after one of the first scavenger hunts. Riddler has lots of knowledge and data on this subject.

Either way, Lazer looked pretty in pink after Saturday! hehehe

I will spool a reel with the white Power Pro. I thought the line was great. I just didn't like to clean up after the dye had dripped everywhere on the boat and all over my hands.

Thanks.

Until someone takes a talking musky or pike to the eye doctor, basically any theory on the entire color thing is just that, a theory. Red line disappears, but red hooks catch more fish??? They say once a fishing lure is at the checkout line, it has done its job. Marketing my friends, marketing. I think almost everyone that hunts or fishes is willing to overpay and/or buy anything that might help them catch one bigger fish, kill one more duck, or kill a deer with two points more than their last.............and I am just as guilty as anyone.

Chibig,

I think you have hit the nail pretty squarely there. I am as guilty as the next with some of these things...I bought the red powerpro this year just to see if it makes a difference at all. I have had better luck with darker lines than lighter ones on very clear water, and the green always turns white...after reading many of the pink-hands posts, I have a feeling the red will get to that color as well... Gimmick? Maybe... will it make a huge difference to the fish? Maybe... I purchased it online for a better deal than the green at Cabelas, rollies, etc. so..it saved me a few $$ to try it out...

Red hooks: Probably just dont stand out as much as silver or possibly bronze.. Again..theory, but if I can buy them at a cheaper price...I'll try it.

I wish there was a company that could figure out how to get the line dyed before it is formed and wound to a braid... I would rather have darker line since I feel (my theory here) is that a fish may tend to notice it less on a darker background like weeds... Again..my theory is based upon clear water...not stained or dark water where visibility is reduced significantly.

Red will disappear at around 12-15 feet down. So the line would have to be that far down to sort of become less visible. Red hooks are visible to fish on using everything except deep diving crankbaits or baits that are used farther than the depth mentioned above. So those red hooks on spinners and jerkbaits. non deep baits etc... will be visible to the fish and will give the bleeding or wounded effect to the fish if in shallow water.

If you read through various musky forums re braided line, many people overwhelmingly seem to swear by Power Pro. So I purchased several spools in 80 or 100lb test and wasn't impressed. It certainly was a serviceable line, but I found that it frayed fairly easily, and the green color faded quickly. So the following year I tried Stren Superbraid and found it to be much easier to use, more durable and the color didn't fade at all. I think that there are probably better braids out there for about the same money or less. For me I don't think I would buy it in any color, unless I found it at half price or something. But it's all personal preference and after comparing the two side by side, I like the Stren Superbraid hands down. I have two friends that also made the same switch and feel the same.

Tiger, SpiderWire, or any other super line, DOES NOT CUT GUIDES. Period, end of story!

When the first braids came out they were weaved loose and that allowed dirt and sand to get in them and then that formed a de-facto sndpaper that could wear guides but any of the lines made in the last 10 years or so will not damage ANY guide out there wether it is the most expensive Fuji or the cheapest Snoopy rod.

Another thing to remember when you hear someone talk poorly about SpiderWire is that they were pretty much the first ones out on the market and we have gone through 3 or 4 generations of braids since then. The SW you bought 15 years ago is nothing like the stuff you buy now.

I have watched tests run where they had a piece of super line that was run back and forth under preasure across a guide to see the wear. After about 1/2 hour the line needs to be replaced from wear. Replace the line and run the test again, after about a solid week with no noticable wear to the guide they figured the line didn't cut the guide!

I used to have red hands... green hands... pruned hands... looked like a peed myself at the end of a day. Then I switched to Spiderwire Stealth. My thumb gets a little black, but that'll happen on all line... and this stuff holds very little water, which I like a lot... keeps your topwaters on top... and your clothes dry.

In response to colored lines and visibility - I take my favorite colored sharpie permanent marker and color whatever length of line you want above the leader(usually some sort of green). I don't think the whole spool needs colored as muskies arent looking at 20 yards of line in the water. The idea is to make the first few feet more camoflouged. Then you can use any kind of line without color added to it that you want. Plus every time you want to retie you just add a little color and you have fresh color every time, never fades - unless you never retie - or never get to go fishing! This also helps you from having to go to longer leaders in clearer water for finicky fish.
