My buddy Sal T landed this state record size female from Channel lake this morning. Caught on a bucktail and independantly measured and girthed. This was probably the same pig that was seen by several PMTT teams on Sunday, and certainly the same fish that Veronica from FRV got last year. It had a distinctive notched tail. Congrats Sal! Fish was safely released.

What a great fish. Congrats to the angler and thanks to all 3 people for taking such good care of her and letting the rest of us chain nuts have a crack at her. Great job.

Its just a pig of a fish, she's very fat and the picks are just fantastic!
He will be putting them up soon. At the moment he is not feeling well.

Yes, we all hope Sal gets well soon. He has been in the hospital since literally hours after he caught that fish. I know he definatly has not been able to enjoy the fact that he landed a fish of this callibar. Knowing Sal, he would love to put up some pic's and a story of this catch, (and like Esoxjake said, they are some fantastic pic's) but right now some things are more important. We will all enjoy soon!

I thought so too, but the fish was verified and measured by a 3rd party. It's possible that Todd and Veronica Mismeasured as well. V may have actually had a 50!

The fish was measured by Sal, and a bystander while I was on phone at 51 1/4" by 24". But don't take my word for it, just wait till you see the pic's.
But that is a good Q! I do wonder if a fish so full of eggs will stretch in length a little, as well as girth.

Sal is going to post some pic's real soon.

Not all people measure fish the same. Bumpboard, girth tape, measuring tape, pinched tail, unpinched tail, measuring in the water, measuring on the boat, measuring vertical, measuring horizontal....Each way can produce different results. The most accurate way, in my opinion, is a bumpboard. Pinching the tail adds a little, but nothing wrong with that. Maybe they didn't pinch the tail last year and maybe Sal did (I would have)

Can't wait to see the picture and good job! Hope all is well.

Not to dis credit anyone but I have photo's of that same fish from 2002 when it measured close to 47 inches, with the same tail and black fade mark in the center of it's body, it took 4 years to reach 49.5 inches in 2006, my measurement may have been off back then as well. never the less I'm really glade she has been a good release this many times, specially on live bait.

WHAT'S UP HERE'S THE SCOOP ON THE FISH FROM THE CHAIN .
HIT THE WATER AT AROUND 8ISH AND RAN INTO A MONSTER 20 MIN. INTO MY DAY. I SEEN TWO SMALLER MALES WITH HER . SHE CAME ON A BUCKTAIL ,JUST SWALLOWED THE ENTIRE BAIT . I LAYED INTO HER PRETTY GOOD AND 15 MIN. LATER SHE WAS IN THE NET.. AND THE SECOND I GOT A GOOD LOOK AT WHAT I HAD I WAS IN SHOCK THIS FISH WAS FAT,, REALLY FAT FROM BEAK TO TAIL ..

I MEASURED HER UP AT 51.25 ON THE DOT W/ A 24'' GIRTH .. I WAS GONNA CALL THE STATE POLICE TO BRING IN A CERTIFIED SCALE BECAUSE I KNEW IT WAS CLOSE TO THE STATE RECORD BUT I DIDN'T WANT TO PUT THIS BEAUTY IN A LIFE OR DEATH SITUATION. SHE ALREADY SPEWED ENOUGH EGGS AS IT WAS . AND I CARE TO MUCH ABOUT THESE CREATURES TO PLAY GOD SO TO SPEAK.. AND FOR THOSE NON BELIEVERS THAT A FISH CAN ONLY GROW SO MUCH IN A GIVEN TIME . PROVE TO ME THAT A FISH OF THIS SIZE CAN'T GROW TWO OR MORE INCHES IN A YEAR .. I ALSO HAD TWO EYE WITNESSES...

IN MY EYES AFTER DOING THE MATH THIS FISH WEIGHED 36LB. 9OZ. NOT INCLUDING A BELLY FULL OF EGGS, MAYBE A FEW POUNDS OF EGGS AND THAT'S PRETTY DAM CLOSE.

CPR IS A GREAT THING

HOW D I RESIZE PICTS (ANYONE)

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am almost certain that when looking through a regulations book a couple years ago it stated that the proper way to measure a fish is to in fact pinch the tail. Either way the fish is huge. Nice catch!

You're right, that is how the DNR does it and is the most accurate measurement of the fish's true length. I'm sure some will disagree and say it is not natural, so I say... to each their own!

Alright, here's the pics! The full fish shot, I have to admit does look like it could be a different fish, but the one release photo shows the distict notch in the tail.
Even the color of the fish looks different from spring to fall. Either way, congrats to you Sal on an awesome beast, and now that your feeling better we can get back to the hunting!
Post your thoughts people.

I'm pretty sure I saw that fish on Sunday during the PMTT event. She was with two males that were right around 40 inches. I knew she was 48 or better, but I never would have guessed 51. Awesome fish. I wish I could have gotten her to go during the tourney...maybe next year. Congrats on a fish of a lifetime.

Cograts Sal!
For what it's worth, using the (L x G)/25-10 formula, the fish's weight is 39.44. With the fat belly that fish had, a belly full of eggs, I think it's pretty safe to say that fish would have been the state record. Congrats on an awesome catch, and AWESOME that your priority was releasing such a beautiful fish.
Speaking of priorities, I need to start spending more time in the boat than I have been this year!
