Location: Brookfield, WI | I took a couple meetings today regarding the upcoming Pre-opener BBQ at Smokey's.
First I had lunch with my buddy Shawn, our Pit Master for the quickly approaching festivities. We discussed logistics regarding the towing, placement, and outfitting of the BBQ rig. Like the many boats that have been recently de-winterized for the fishing season, the rig has to come out of storage and be prepared for the BBQ season. We will be ready to put the rig on the road and fire it up early morning Friday, 5/4, as planned. We discussed the procurement of various meats and side dishes, and the preparation of said delicacies.
In short, our Pit Master is as excited as a cheerleader before tryouts, and looks forward to exhibiting his meat smoking moves.
My second meeting entailed a confab with none other than the venerable John Laimon himself, the owner of Smokey's. To this point I had not personally discussed the BBQ with John, but had been utilizing Professor Koepp of The Waterfront Musky College as an intermediary. The Professor had assured me that John was eagerly anticipating the event. To say that the assurance I had received was an understatement, is well, an understatement.
John is very excited to have the gathering take place at his famous Musky Shop. We discussed the placement of the rig, the tables and chairs John will have available, our power and water needs, and the arrival of smoked meat craving musky anglers. I've become aware through my conversations with John, that word of the BBQ has actually spread outside the world of M1st.
So the time has come for me to begin the final stages of this, my BBQ Plan, by ordering our meats and side dishes (which will be provided at reasonable prices by Great Northern BBQ of Pewaukee), and obtaining the necessary bakery goods, paper products, etc.
Now is the time to step up and be counted. I have received a fair number of positive replies. There have also been a fair number of "I hope I can make it" or "I'll let you know" replies.
So let me know. If you're sitting on the fence, I think you should throw that leg over to the side with the smoked meats. You'll be more comfortable without the fence top in your crotch. If you've already replied in the positive let me know again on this thread. I would like to know how many people you'll be attending with, (remember wives and kids can come), and what time you think you will arrive. If you know of hungry anglers that want to attend, but do not generally frequent this board, please include them in your totals if you're fairly sure they will come. The resulting statistics will be utilized to determine the overall poundage of meats to be ordered, and what time the smoking process should begin.
I will be at Smokey's all day on Friday. Keep in my mind that John has requested the festivities wind down by 10:00 PM.
If you're still undecided, just remember the simple equation on which my BBQ/Musky Fishing theory is based.
Fishing Skills + Smoked Meat Enhanced Mojo = Fish in the Boat on 5/4.
Kevin
Thank you for your interest.
and
Thank you M1st for allowing me to use the board to put this together. |

Location: Brookfield, WI | This is starting to shape up very nicely.
Out back, the pigs are grunting and the chickens are shuffling around with more urgency and uncertainty than normal.
Could they be sensing their pending doom? Soon it will be time to put my knives to the whetstone and strap on my butcherin' clothes.
What's the best way to pluck a chicken?

| Hi Honey. I'll be there for part of the night with our daughter and Shawn's two girls. No way am I leaving you and Shawn completely unsupervised from dawn to 10:00 pm with all that meat. Let's try to avoid any smoked meat related incidents.
By the way, he's buying the meat. I don't allow amateur butchering and chicken plucking in my house or on our lot. I'll also be sending a cooler packed with iced teas to make sure he remains PROPERLY hydrated. I expect him to be able to fish all day Saturday.
I can use the free time.

Location: Racine, Wi | Choogie Shep!!! I'm looking forward to it. I think it's me and the little squirt now. Wait a minute, that's her cranky time..... oh well, she'll make sure she complains if I stay too long. Plus, she'll keep me from getting "hydrated". Probably a good thing if I'm getting up at the booty crack of the morning. |

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | I can almost smell that Smoking good food already. This is going to be one very fine opening weekend. Some finger licking good food, beverages and thousands of muskie baits all over the walls. New rods and reels in stock waiting to be used. Where else would one want to be on the night before the opener.
Wait, this could be trouble. My kind of trouble.
See everyone there!!! |

Location: Brookfield, WI | Great weekend. Good food and fun fishing. It took a while on Okauchee but almost like last year in the IMTT, Joel got four fish himself in about 45 minutes near the end of the day. Unfortunately three were skinny pike. One 33" musky to finish it off. Trolling is fun, especially at the end of the day when I'm so tired I can hardly see straight.
