Sonar Trouble shooting

I just tried my new unit this weekend and couldn't get a consistent depth reading. The unit is an Eagle Fish elite 500c. It would lock on a depth reading for a few seconds then just start blinking and be on the last depth reading it marked. The GPS worked beatifully. Are there some sensitivity, surface clarity and or noise rejection settings I need to adjust? It seems like a possible defective transducer since I adjusted all the above settings ad nauseum. Anyone have any Ideas?

if you have your transducer mounted with in a foot of your motor you will get cavatation which will mess up the singal and cause the depth finder screen to blink. the only way to fix it is to move it.

did you try running in auto modes first, how deep was it, and at what speeds were you losing bottom: all, slow, fast? Were you able to see full arches or other features? The first thoughts that came to mind is transducer isn't low enough to the hull or got kicked up, not enough power to keep bottom, or another locator running at the same time. Another item to check is you have the latest firmware for the locator.
