Location: Aurora, IL. | I've always had the bait shop spool my reels in the past but wanted to start doing it myself. I was hoping someone could give me an idea of how much and what lb. test of mono is typically spooled up on the reel before the braided goes on?
I've appreciated the help you all have given others in the past as it has helped me as well. Your thoughts would be a big help.

| I use 17lb or 20lb mono for backing and normally fill the spool up half way with mono then uni-knot right into cortland spectron 80lb. ran this for years and never had a problem plus with the backing their is never a need to take it off when respooling just pull of old braid and uni knot to the new stuff and respool. ALWAYS remember to tape your mono to your spool after you tie your knot, I use electrical tape works great.

Location: oswego, il | You can use mostanything for backing. I prefer using lighter # test like 4. It packs alot harder on the spool. Not sure how much of a difference it makes. If I run into the backing then I am going to be mad at my boat partner for not getting on the trolling motor because I will have 80 yards or more of superline out. |

| I ussually run 20lb. Big Game for backing just because I ussually have a lot of it on hand. I would just use any old mono you have laying around. I would not use Dacron as backing as I have seen it slip just like super lines, not as often but enough that I wouldn't use it.
As for how much backing that all depends on how big of reel you are putting it on, what diameter the backing is and the diameter of the line you are putting on top of it. |
