I have a 12 volt minnkota bow mount, i bought the boat and it had been wired to hook up 2 batteries to run it. When I hook up battery one alone it works, if i hook up battery 2 alone it doesnt run. Is battery 2 hooked up and working if i have both batteries hooked up?
Thanks

You should have the 2 batteries jumpered from + to + an - to -. If they are hooked up correct and motor does not work then I would say that battery #2 is totally dead.

both battery's run up to where you plug in the motor. I dont know how they are wired. From the plug there are 4 wires running back, 2 wires to each battery. I used the same battery to test. I hooked up the battery to one set of wires motor worked. I undid the wires from that battery and hooked the battery to the other set of wires, motor did not work?? All wires are hooked up at the plug, for some reason do both batteries have to be hooked up at the same time to draw juice from both batteries??
Do I make sense??

I say disconect the two wires from the plug use the two that you know work and rig the two batteries in series. To do this you must connect the negative wire from the plug to the negative terminal of battery 2. Then you have to jump the two batteries together by placing a jump cable from the positive terminal of battery 2 to the negative terminal of battery 1. Then take the positive wire from the plug and attach to the positive terminal of battery 1 and don't forget a circiut breaker on your positive wire.

You can see this on page 21 of this manual http://sites.mercurymarine.com/pls/portal/url/ITEM/23E2B3345A6E6A50...

Do not jump positive to negative on your batteries. that will give you a 24 volt system. Look at the top of page 21 that was referenced, it even says 24 VOLT! Go positive to positive and negative to negative. Like I said earlier, think of how you would jump a car if you forget later on how to do this. I would not cut 2 wires either. I would wire them to the correct terminals as labeled. It doesn't matter what battery you go to once you wire them in parallel, it will all be in one circuit.

For others out there, Fisher and I were talking about why the trolling motors have 4 wires from the TM plug. The only reason I could come up with is when you run at higher speeds or load you need to draw more amps and an AWG8 wire realistically supports about 30-40 amps without creating heat (to much resistance), so I was assuming the second set of wires were to aid in this higher amp draw. Not sure if that is correct but it's a thought.

The reason there are 4 wires running to the front, is because the jumpering is done at the TM plug for 24 volts. Most likely. If you want to run 12 volts, look at the connection to the plug and receptacle, and make sure they are connected to have the batteys in parrallel.

If the wires are 8 guage, you will be alright, as you are running two sets to the receptacle.

And as mentioned, do not wire the batterys in series. You could damage your bowmount.

That makes sense Shep about the TM plug being made for both 12 and 24V systems. Why create 2 different wiring plugs if not needed. That also explains why nothing happened when I wired both of them up (as previously done in my boat by the last owner). I wired them to the same battery which was already wired in parallel meaning both wires were running 12V power.

So Fisher, just use the 2 wires that make the motor work and tuck away the other 2. I wouldn't remove them just in cause you pick up a 24V system later on.

Thanks Shep for the insight.

My new Tuffy came with two plugs for the bow mount. one for 12 volt, and one for 24 volt.

I'm not sure if the 12 volt plug was wired to run two batteries in parallel. I will find out.
