Subject: Muskies, Alewives, and Thiaminase


OK, here's one for everybody...

I have a reservoir close by, in which Alewives make up the bulk of the food supply.

I just found an article on the Cornell University website that states Alewives carry an enzyme called Thiaminase, which causes a thiamine deficiency in predators that eat alewives. The article did not specifically state what the effects were.


My question is this: What effects would a thiamine deficiency have on these Muskies?

Some of what I have read about it has shown that there are some neurological problems, but mainly have read that there is some reproductive problems/early mortality of new born fish. However the studies I read about were mainly on the Salmonids. I'll ask some profs here and see what I can find out.
