Does anybody have any suggestions on place to purchase reel parts on the internet or in the madison area? I've found parts for abu's on the internet before but I can't find anyplace that sells pete maina parts. I'm looking just for a reel handle on a new pete maina reel and also the reel nut cap on an old pete maina reel and I don't want to send it into Bass pro shop or a repairman for $1 worth of parts.

OR...

does anybody know if any of the reel handles sold at R&H's fits a pete maina reel, like the gator grips?

Thanks in advance!

I know there is a reel repair guy in Madison. I think he may be on Johnson Street. I will look around and see if I can find his card. It has the address and phone number. I will get back to you. Ken

Thanks Ken,

I'll definitely be dropping off my abu's there. I checked out a cached image of the website (seems to not exist anymore) and he doesn't mention Pete Maina reels at all. I'll give a call tomorrow, but still, anybody know of a great place to buy Pete Maina parts online? Perhaps I should try Pete at his site.

Thanks again!

I believe the Maina reel is produced by Plueger. Try their service center at (800) 347-3759. I haven't physically tried one but pretty sure that the Gator Grip GG3 series will work on that reel too.

Find "Hatterass Outfitters" on the net and check out the "reel candy". Abu has exploded reel diagrams on their web site. Anybody can break down and rebuild a 5000 or 6000 series Abu. You can trick them out like a '68 Camero. At lease get Smooothie Drag washers and ask Tres to e-mail you a diagram of installation and lubrication. You can do it.

stdevos you can put an ABU power handle on your Maina reel, you will just need to have an ABU screw. I put one on a GM reel which is almost identical to the Maina.

Thanks guys, a lot of good info!

Another question for anyone regarding "tricking" them out. I've had lots of problems with Abu's pawl catching. I can't count the number of times I've replaced them on 6 different abu's. It's my understanding (from lambeau's post) that you need to replace the worm gear when you replace the pawl but... would anyone recommend upgrading to a ceramic pawl like this one:
http://www.mikesreelrepair.com/product_info.php?cPath=47_49&product...

The problem with replacing the worm gear is that if I simply replace the pawl (a quick fix that can be done ON the water for $2), I'm back in business for half a season. But, if I did upgrade to a better pawl, would this just cause more carnage for my worm gear?

Thanks guys!

You don't have to replace the worm gear when you replace the pawl. You do have to replace the pawl if you replace the worm gear. The only thing I know of that damages either is gunk building up in the ends of the worm gear. That won't let the pawl travel all the way to the end of the gear and will wear things out. If your worm gear is already damaged then replace it, if not just replace the pawl and keep the worm gear clean. If you keep the assembly clean and oiled I see no reason for a ceramic pawl.

Pawls "normally" do not go bad on their own. They do wear, but when they get worn that bad, you might as well replace the worm gear while you are at it. If it is a newer reel that you are having a problem with the pawl going bad, more than likely one of the end "teeth" on the worm gear is bad.

I will bet that if those people that continuely have problems with pawls going bad several times during a season replace their worm gear, their pawl eating problems will be gone. Without seeing a worm gear, it is hard to say.

I called Bass Pro and they are shipping the reel handle for the Pete Maina as we speak. She asked how I wanted to pay for it and then said, ah... we'll just ship it to you. I thought they would stick me $10 for the handle and $5 for shipping. I was even prepared to haggle with them. Talk about great customer service!

Thanks again all!
