There's gotta be some guys out there with some annoying fishing partner habits!!

Mine would have to be My bro when he's throwin a Double Cowgirl, which seem to carry about a 5 gallon bucket worth of water in them. On his backcast he pretty much hangs the lure over my head while the cowgirl leaks on me. Then I just look over at him with an I wanna kill you look and he just says "what" as the waters driiping down my face. Sometimes I'd like to throw him outta the boat

I find it annoying when a fishing partner complains and loses confidence when the fishing sucks. You cant catch them unless you try.

Complaining about not catching fish is the big one as the lure hangs over the side of the boat, its not perch fishing guys...

The worst is the old "I don't like this spot let's fish that other spot". When you supply the boat and most of the tackle you can fish anywhere you'd like until that time arrives we will be fishing this spot. If you don't like it I am sure the fishing from the boat landing is spectacular. Catching the first and or largest fish is another annoying habit.

I don't have one set partner, and in fact, I like to fish alone much of the time.
But there are certain traits of guys that I have taken fishing....once.
The guy who stands around and does nothing at the boat landing, or the exact opposite, when the guy runs around and tries to do everything but doesn't know what he is doing.
Disrespecting my equipment. Like using the shaft of my trolling motor as a step on to the dock.
Loud talkers.
People who don't know how to cast. You know them...they take the lure back until it's almost touching the water, before they make a cast that resembles Frankenstein swinging a baseball bat.
People who complain about boat control. I don't cut anyone off, and try my best to put the boat in position so we both can cast effectively. But when the wind is blowing over 20mph, sometimes it's just hard to do. If they aren't familiar with the lake, I will explain what each spot that we are fishing looks like and how we are going to fish it. Along with, "When in doubt, cast in the same direction as me. Not on top of me, it's an 18 foot boat, so I can handle our lures landing 18 feet apart."
Lures getting within 2 feet of my head......goes along with the 18 foot rule.
I'd rather have a guy who knows how to cast standing on the front deck with me, than a guy who can't cast standing in the back of the boat.
I'm not the perfect boat partner either, but Sworrall understands that during the course of the day he will see me laying flat on my back on the rear deck of his boat, sometimes for more than a half hour. I'm not giving up, I just know my limitations.

I just can't stand fishing with a slob.
Don't leave lures on the deck where I may step or even worse I may sit on one. Put things away when you are done with them.

No coolers or tackle boxes in the middle of the floor and please, no open pop cans to tip over on my carpet. I really hate that. All of my beverages have caps on them.

I can do a pretty good job of tolerating most isiosyncrasies that a boat partner can come up with...
I agree w/ the casting over my lines thing, and the negative attitude gets old quite fast.
Other things that come to mind...

-rubbing my nose in it by using and catching fish on baits that 'shouldn't work'
-asking for me to get the net before I can even get the trolling motor thawed out and deployed
-making sure the mountains are in the background for the pictures

(any similarities between these and real persons on this board are purely coincidental)

and then there's...

-sticking your boat partner w/ a hook so generously returned by a small northern pike at about 230 mph...right into his calf
-comic relief provided by pulling a small northen 12' forward on a hookset
-so generously pointing out the rock reef...just after hitting it
-breaking off the end of a lure retriever by stupidly using it as a push-pole on Lake...(Ah, though you got me, huh?)
-making short work on a bump board hinge...what a wreck
-stealing a lure that their first muskie came on
but most of all...
-forgetting the promised sandwiches!

on second thought, this is a give and take game...I'll put up w/ you if you put up w/ me! Enjoy your time on the water...it's too short as it is. I do want to fish w/ Beav someday though.

I hate it when I fish with guys who bring 10 rods and 5 tackle boxes for a one day outing. What is even more annoying is the partner who isn't ready to go at the designated time. When the vehicle and boat are pointing at the launch I don't want to have to stop for beer, smokes, leaders, whatever. These things are planned in advance so get your s*%t ready before hand. Most of all, I agree with others who don't like a bad attitude in the boat on slow days. Some days the muskies are on, but most days are a struggle. The only way to overcome those days is with a good attitude and hard work. Sometimes even that won't do it but it sure ups your odds.

Cigarette or cigars in the boat . . . . especially when they put burn marks in the carpet. In thoise cases I would like to do the same to their vehicle or their furniture at home. Spilling stuff in the boat is going to happen, just dump some water on it. Peeing on the side of the boat . . . . .and not dumpng some water on it as a "flush" is not cool either.
Trying to eat or drink when on plane does not work either. I don't like coffee, especially when it is whipped in my face by the wind, and although I do like donuts, watching the crumbs come flying off and hitting me in the face is not how I usually like to eat them.
I have had alot of people compliment the Tuffy Esox Magnum as " the best boat to pee out of" they have ever been in. Maybe Tuffy could use this as a marketing tool????

Only a real a$$ would promise sandwiches and not bring them.

My smiling Utahian friend. Come to WI for the southern opener. Your bald pal from Portage should come down here, too. I just might feed everybody fishing muskies in Waukesha County that weekend.

I did bring corned beef and ham for everyone on St. Patty's day.

I am a lousy boat partner in some respects, but I like to think I'm personable, and I always shower every day.

Joel thinks I'm lucky.

Stay tuned.

- Fair weather "fishermen"

- People who give up when the fishing is slow and lay down to take a nap in the boat. (Wait...I actually like that at times...that's paid off for me numerous times, when they sleep, I get fish! And i get to watch them snap up out of a deep sleep and smack their head on something in the boat when I yell "FISH ON!" )

- Messy eaters in the boat that leave crumbs and crap everywhere

- People with a low attention span when we're planning out being out allllllllllllllllll day regardless of the fish activity, weather or whatever

- People who constantly want to be moving around from spot to spot

- People that don't pitch in for gas....I shouldn't have to ask....

If you can't find the right kind of partner that matches your game well...then....fishing alone rules! LOL!

two things tied for 1st place for me. My rod storage can't accommodate the bazillion rods I like to have with if I think I might troll and cast throughout the day. Please don't fold my rod eyelets over by stepping on the rods. Second, the rods and baits we are using are getting longer. Please don't think you can cast straight off the bow with an overhead cast. I hope to get through life without applying first aid to human flesh and treble hooks.

I've been pretty fortunate so far with boat partners!

I can't complain about much as I am the proverbial boat slut...

But I've had a few things happen that I feel like pointing out.

1. I don't have a boat. I've never had a boat. I don't know how to back one up, and I have no idea what to do at the launch or how anything works. (I am learning!) I'd be happy to do anything I am able to do, but you gotta tell me what the hell that is.

2. Front or back of the boat I don't care, but lets agree on a few things:

If I'm in the front of the boat, and you're in back casting ahead of the boat, what exactly does that leave me to cast at?

If its your boat, I will always ask first what you are throwing and pick something that offers good contrast. That said, when you switch baits, maybe you should check to see what I'm throwing so you dont switch to the same bait in the same color... The goal is fish in the boat, which will go much easier if we work TOGETHER.

3. I'll bring food or beer or whatever, but let's figure that out ahead of time. I don't know what sort of food you eat or even IF you eat. I forget to eat sometimes.

4. Of COURSE I'll pay for gas, but I'd rather wait until the end of the day to see if we trolled all day, changed lakes three times and put 300 miles on your truck, or spent the day on a no motor lake or you started the motor once to drive the boat on the trailer. I'll make sure the day doesn't cost you anything for sure, but I'm not going to pay for your next 5 trips too... (bought gas for a buddy once at the beginning of the day, filled his truck and his boat which were both EMPTY, cost me almost $200. The lake was 15 minutes away, we used the trolling motor all day, and he was still using the gas I bought for his boat the following spring.) The same goes for the launch fee -- I'll get it. But don't assume I know there even IS one. I've never fished here, remember?

5. FISH. Don't just drive, FISH. A fish in the net is a fish in the net, I don't care if you catch it or I catch it, let's catch it!

6. I make fun of people. It's not out of disprespect, or because I think I could do anything better, its just what I do. If I like you, I'll find something to make fun of. If I don't make fun of you, it probably means I just don't like you enough to joke around with you.

7. Your boat, your rules. I fish hard. And I won't stop, so when you want to call it a day, you'd best not ask, just do it.

8. If I'm up front, I'll get the trolling motor. You don't need to step around me and do it yourself while I stand there in the way. BUT: I space out sometimes and forget. This does not mean you have to do it, it just means you need to point at it or say "trolling motor"...

9. If I have never fished the lake before and I don't even have a map, don't expect much of an answer when you say "where should we go?"

10. To the contrary, if I have fished the lake a bunch of times, with half a dozen people, don't be surprised of I point out a spot that you don't usually fish. There's a reason I'm pointing out that spot.

11. I don't talk much. I'm fishing. Doesn't mean I won't talk if you feel like it, I just don't have much to say most of the time.

12. You are welcome to any of my lures provided you do three things. 1. ASK. 2. When you put them away, please put them back in MY box, not yours. 3. If you lose them, please replace them.

13. I know you usually fish alone and cast sidearm from the back of the boat, but today I am standing on the front of the boat. I do not want to keep hearing *WHOOSH* and feeling the wind on my ear from the bait you just missed my head with all day long. It's only a matter of time until you bury that lure in the back of my head. Nobody is THAT good.

14. If we are fishing on the front deck together, for God's sake, lets coordinate our casts so you are casting while I am figure 8'ing. And for those rare occasions when I am figure 8'ing and I have a following fish, don't plop your bait in the water and start doing the same. It's just not funny, especially when you scare the fish off.

15. You're welcome, as I said before, to use my lures. When you are done with them, please do not leave them on the seat I am about to sit down on.

16. Please try to stay in the boat when I have a fish on.

#1 People bringing too many rods and huge tackle boxes as to be #1. Simply rude and selfish - always a complete waste of space. and usually the person is just trying to show off their gear. A big cooler is fine, cuz I know i'm gonna drink all their beer to get back at them.
#2 would be throwing cigarette butts in the lake. I just won't have it.
#3 screaming in excitement when they see me get a follow or hit. I enjoy and appreciate the enthusiasm, but don't scare the fish!
#4 casting etiquette.

Someone you offer to take fishing or who asks to go with you and they don't even offer to help with gas. It's not so much the fact I need the money for gas, but it's just the common courtesy when you go with a guy that drives his truck, takes his boat and takes the time to take that guy with you. The offer is all that matters to me, whether I take it or not, depends on how persistant the guy is about me taking the money or not. The offer is what gets the guy back in my boat!

I dont know if any of you have had this happen but I'm pretty focused when I fish and zone into everything going on with what i'm doing... I've got this buddy who thinks its funny to fake a hook up on a figure 8 and splash his rod in the water making it sound like a fish is fighting... bugs the bejesus out of me...

Also have another buddy who constantly bangs his lure on my motor cover - scratches the hell out of it..

Not to long now boys..

OK, I have to admit there is one scenario that bugs me. When I say leave the boat where it is on the pier when preparing to load up, I mean it. I do not want to hear my trailer hitting the hull after it's been beached. I tend to put the trailer under the boat and not on top of it. LOL

What bugs me in the boat?

-People who AREN'T hungover when they get to the landing
-People who think they know everything
-People who know everything
-People who don't talk
-People who talk too much
-People who eat peanuts/chips/chex mix in the boat, spill and then step all over it
-People who don't dip their feet in the water or wipe them for that matter before getting in the boat...I hate sand!
-People who make a swoosh sound with their rod and when you look back they are naked as a new born...only one guy I know does that
-"Men" who show up wearing a visor. Just cause you wanna look gay don't make people think I am also

Bunch of other stuff too.

When the action is good and I'm on a good spot hitting it with everything I got and I look back to find my partner sitting there looking at me with a pop or a granola bar in his hand taking a little break. LOL, I usually just give him crap, but when it happens too many times in a day it begins to irritate me.

Do I take musky fishing too seriously? I suppose yes.

Oh also from my other fishing partner that only wants to fish on the calm side of the lake, and when it isn't stormy, or rainy, or cold, or if its getting dark outside.

Not showing up on time at the Okauchee landing when I have to be there at 4am to drop the boat in the water. I sit out in the bay for 45 mins waiting for his butt to get there. As soon as I take off and screw it, he shows up.....arrrrrrrrgggghhhh.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, we all do it. But when its bad enough to stink up OUTSIDE, even when the boat is MOVING? That's where I gotta draw the line, man. Don't eat pickled eggs, sauerkraut, and baked beans washed down with a 12 pack of guiness the night before, you're peeling the clearcoat off my lures!

Yeah....after reading a few more of these posts...I do admit I have a few more to add that I do agree with:

- Cell phones. Can't stand people that spend more time talking on the phone with wives/GFs than fishing. If it's talking to other fishermen that are out on the lake in other areas...fine....but....when you go fishing with me.....you wife/GF has the opportunity to believe that's where you're at if you're with me and not out at the bars or the bewbie clubs. First off...get a wife or a GF that has some self esteem and trusts you. Don't make your domestic issues my issue.

- The smoking thing. I don't smoke or chew either. and I don't want my boat or carpet or seats burnt from ashes or cigs and yeah...don't litter. If you feel the need to smoke...you'd better be really careful. Remember...we're all sitting/standing on top of a lot of fuel. I don't need to feel endangered and I don't want my boat messed up from you. Same goes for the tobacco/chew. Don't let your spit cup fall over in my boat! And when you spit in the lake...make it OUT of the boat...and take the spit cup with you and throw it away at the end of the day, don't leave it in my boat for me to have to clean up and deal with.

- Yes...lack of proper attire is a HUGE factor! Plan for everything! Meaning....layers and water proof rain gear..gloves and hats. My motto in life is "It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it." I don't want to make our day be a short day because you've under dressed and are cold. We can always leave the extra clothes/gear in the truck at the launch. If it's needed and there's not enough storage in the boat for it...leave it in the truck and launch. It's easier to go back to the launch than to go back home.

- Yes...not watching where your rod/bait is headed on the back swing of a cast. It takes two seconds to make sure you're clear of any/all other humans in the boat, as well as gear, seats, etc.

Esoxaddit's list is hilarious by the way! LOL! Great points!

Free candy bars? How can anyone complain about that?

But the dip cup, that is a rule that should extend everywhere! (While my posts don't indicate it, I AM pretty easy going.)

But that %^$%* dip cup makes me wanna PUKE. Guests in my boat who want to learn how to fish for muskies then totally ignore the instructions I provide.

Too much gear

Not enough gear (not prepared for the day)

People who make no attempt to keep their gear organized

People who don't pay attention to details

People who don't offer to help

Unsafe people

People who cancel last minute leaving an open seat in my boat

peolpe who don't respect the few rules I ask them to abide by

me and my dad who if we musky fish are good at what he calls flow the way the world moves around you so i have to think for more than my self but sometimes we bring other people or if im bass fishing with one of my freinds

1: if im bass fishing and the bass are shallow im gonna have my rod one lure and walking in the water all day for miles don't cross my line and make me have to cut it to walk back not fishing to tie a new lure on or untie the huge not that formed

2: if we brought someone and they were a smoker don't do it at all or by me it gives me terrible migrain headaces that mess up my fishing then i get pissy.

3: if walking in the water bass will be hitting the storm will be here in 3 hours don't wine about not wanting to make the mile one more time or wine that your legs hurt or you will be sitting on shore.

the flow thing works

Thanks, Mack.

I don't ask for much, LOL! I just wanna fish and have a good time. And I have to be honest, 95% of the guys I've fished with are great to be around. But there's one or two, man... If they called me up and invited me I'd probably still go, but by the end of the day, I'd be glad to see them and me going in different directions!

But let's be honest, reading all the stuff above? How may of you guys are guilty of doing at least a couple of those things?

I know I'm guilty of at least a few:

peeing on the gunnels
spilling a beer now and then

ESOXADDICT,,,,,,,seems like me and you fish with the same person. I lost my mind reading capabilities years ago. Just ASK !
I REALLY HATE when my fishing partner is having a bad day and decides to leave the water to go get drunk somewhere.usually when it's his turn to take his boat. i didnt use a vacation day to go fishing for two hours only for you to decide you want to get drunk,,,,pleanty of time to get drunk after we fish.If ya want to get drunk...dont ask me to go fishing for two hours then decide your mad at something and want to ease your nerves ........

It annoys me when fishing partners complain about fishing partners.

Just joking but there is some truth to that. It's almost as if some are saying that to make a point in order to give you a hint that something you are doing is pissing them off....so I'll intentionally do stuff to rub some of them the wrong way...hehehehehe.

Let's see though...
-Don't mind fishing 3 in a boat, but if you are in the same part of the boat as I am don't stand so dang close to me that it feels like you are trying to hump my leg.
-Conversation is good, but keep it different. Don't want to hear about the same darn thing every stinking time I'm out with you. If you want to gossip about your own insignificant personal issues go get your hair done and vent to the blue haired ladies there.
-Talking up a certain product or company doesn't impress me, so shut up about it. I know guys who catch just as many muskies fishing out of a canoe or from shore as those guys with the fastest, newest boats with space aged outboards on them.

I find it annoying when a fishing partner complains and loses confidence when the fishing sucks. You cant catch them unless you try.

1) Not being on time. My boat, your invited, be on time unless your wife or girlfriend was involved or both at the same time.
2) Bringing walleye gear when were muskie fishing...if you don't have the equipment borrow mine but don't insist on bringing yours.
3) Smoking is welcome as long as it doesn't make the carpet or the water.
4) You use it, you lose it, you buy it. The box is always open but don't just say your sorry.
5) Silence is golden (not Andrew), I don't talk a lot unless were on the move so don't expect me to be the conversationalist. At the bar you can't get me to shut-up
6) Fishing with a hangover is ok as long as you don't mind puking in the lake or a bucket all day.
7) Tight wallet is alright as long as I picked you up at the mission. If your a little short one day buy the next one, if your always short get a 2nd job!!!

I could go on with these all night but you'll know if somethings wrong when I don't say yes when you ask to go fishing.

Cigars, chew and a bad atttude. Those are my big three. I can deal with the cigars and chew if they are very positive and have a great attitude. My boat has it's share of burn spots from the last 7 year of clients and friends. It's a boat, a fishing machine. $hit happens.

Bad attitudes will get you a quick boat ride back to the launch. It's never happened or even came close yet. I seem to have the power to change attatudes with a little time in my boat.

Most annoying thing, is when a guy plays loud, constant hippie music all day long, loud too, and keeps singing along (if you can call it singing) and chain-smokes too, and thinks he can "fish better" by means of the Old Indian Fish Call trick.

Guys like that SUCK.

People that just have to throw their bait into 6 inches of water and get hung up. You go back and get their lure and before you even have the boat turned around, they cast it right back into the same spot and get hung up again.

People who don't know squat but can't help but give their opinion about every spot you take them to. " I don't think I would have even stopped here", or my personal favorite, "So, have you caught fish here before?"

Another one that drives me nuts is a guy that when you ask them, "Did you bring anything to eat or drink?" and they say, "No, I'll be fine, I won't need any food or water, I never bring it with me. Then at the very moment you pull out a pop or a beer they say, "Hey can I get one of those"?

I didn't mention attitude, but that is seriously the only thing that will make me not want to fish with you again. Ok, it's cold, it's raining, we haven't seen a fish in six hours, my feet are wet too. But this doesn't "suck", this is musky fishing! What sucks is having to lay down on the front deck for three hours in the sun on a 95 degree day because you had too much to drink the night before. Temper tantrums on the boat? Uhhh, no. I don't care who catches the fish, somebody catch the fish. If you're going to get upset because it wasn't you? Man, you are just not cut out for this.

It's perfectly ok, to say something like "come ON you stupid fish!" or "man this is brutal" when its 97 and there's no wind. It IS. But that doesn't mean "let's go home" it means "sure will be nice fishing when the sun goes down later on!"

Text messaging during a tournament.

"Partner" getting pissed after I lose your fish at the net and throwing HIS 9 foot All Star in the lake.

Spending the next 1/2 day looking for your 9 foot All Star with an underwater camera, snorkle and mask.

If I gotta go, I gotta go....just bring me to shore!

If I fall in the lake with a fish on, help me back in before asking "what the f@&k are you doing?"

guys who take themselves and the fishing too seriously...When musky fishing becomes more like a work week and not a fun hobby that is where I draw the line

I am competitive...but when the competition turns away from a friendly competition that is when the fun is also taken out

People questioning me too much...If i am not in your way, or effecting what YOU are doing, then don't worry about what I am doing, you are a big boy and you can hook a fish on your own

People who complain about boat habits who only use other peoples boats, and people who take it so seriously that it seems more like work to them. Other than that I don't care.

Almost forgot the biggest one..someone who wants to stream fish, but can't stand up in a small boat.

*bad net jobs! ;-)~

*guys who figure 8 a fish you brought in while you still figure 8'ing!
*bad boat control

ok all kidding aside...

i think the most annoying things are lateness, too much #*^@ stuff, not offering to bring beer/food or pay for gas... and don't cast in front of my lure!

How bout the partner who is driving that after we are done working a spot he has to sit and stare at the map for 10 mins before deciding which spot to hit next while you sit up front very impatient and rattle off 10 places near by that have great potential.

Or how bout when that same partner decides to go to the next spot he has to creep at about ten mph for 300 yds before he opens it up to get there.

And the one who has to stop the boat right on top of prime fall Canada shoreline trolling structure only to look at 20 different jakes before deciding which one to try next.

The same one who wont even slow down the boat so you can change up once and awhile.

The same one who speeds up when you say lets take this pass slower.

The same one who has to sit in the boat for 20 mins every morning and look in every compartment ten times and drink a half a thermos of coffee before un tying from the dock.

The same one who has to make sure he's in proper position to cast the stucture perfect but could care less where the back of the boat is at.

The same one who always has to drift with the wind even when it's a 3 mph wind, cant use that trolling motor battery!!! It's sacred!

The same one never willing to try new spots, lures, tactics, always gotta do the same thing we've always did and catch the same as we've always caught.

The same one that wants 20 different pictures of his fish, girth, weight, upside down to the right, up down backwards but when I get a fish it's my fault my stupid camera doesnt' work and one shot is good enough!
Ok enough on this, im going to go grab another bud!! Weiser that is!

GOTONE's post cracked me up! hehe

Guys that take their sweet a$$ time getting the net, and then only to get it caught in a bunch of rods, or throw there bait and pole on top of it only to struggle to get it untangled. Then they cry when I start yelling at them for doing something dumb?????? hello! I wait all day for a fish so you can gingerly screw it up for me?
I had to hand land a fish or two because of this. Dude was still trying to untangle the mess after I had the fish unhooked and was waiting for a pick. NOT COOL!

Sometimes when youre fishing out of someone elses boat, and they put on the brakes cause they want to pepper their favorite spot to death and leave you out in no-mans land, with the boat pointed at that spot. yeah, that irritates me. sometimes..........

food, drink, smoke, doesn't bother me, cause I do it too, but, when they stumble around your boat like a retard, and step on the eyelets of your rods, bend the handles on your reels, and then deny it when you say whats up! %*&^($

Guys that talk the talk, but, when the going gets tough, its windy, rainy, cold, or too hot, they whine like little beeotchs. Or, when the fishing is slow. they just want to go instead of putting some time in to figure it out. seen it so many times, when you finally give in to go, you let down your guard, and then like clockwork, you miss a fish boatside.

yes, I have a lot of annoyances, but, am pretty easy to get along with.
Just fish, the rest is just filler.

My brother insists on making the sound of the cast and the splash himself, like he's a musician or something......... Ssshhhhhooooooooo.................plush! is how it goes. Often followed by a proud chuckle..... Hearing that a couple hundred times in a day tends to make one a bit crazy.

A second peeve is fishing 'tonka with someone and they want to spend the time looking at the houses, if you want to do that call a realtor. I can see taking a moment to look at the "eye candy", but houses, no. Appreciate an eagle, yes, but appreciate an egress window....no.

Last and the worst, people that don't pay attention and finish the retrieve. Several times I've turned after seeing a fish follow their bait and they proceed to lift it out of the water I say...."It only looked mid 40s, we don't want that fish". They say "What fish"? I reply..."The one that was ready to eat your bait." I think I'm going to laminate Hulbert's article from MH and keep it in the boat for reference for others to read.....and read again.

I would guess it would be when my brother inlaw starts catching fish on the same kind of bait that I only had follows on. Then it's lines like "You want to try my bait.... Here take my rod , I have it hooked for you...Did you want to touch the fish for good luck before I let it go."
That and using the same leader all year, even when all the black is off the snap and the leader is kinked up every which way. Still have a blast fishing.

What bugs me the most is no reciprocal exchange of fishing knowledge or hot spots. We all keep certain information close to the vest but there comes a time when you feel "safe" to share it with certain people, especially a good fishing buddy, so you do. Then the guy never loosens up enough to tell you something he knows about a body of water or time of year...but deep down he's thinking " thanks for telling me that stupid!" I find myself giving out "test information" first to feel them out before I start to speak the truth.
>Another thing is the idiot that bangs his lure in the water to remove weeds....I always have a heart attack thinking it was a boatside blow-up.
>Throwing anything in the water.
>When they hold their pole with the lure hanging down and spinning around as you run the lake.
>When they just sit there and don't fish, like they're bored and it's your fault.
If one thing is for sure it's that you can really find out what a person is like by taking him out in your boat.

This is why I love fishing with some of the people I do...You don't have to worry about a lot of this stuff, because they are just as crazy about fishing as I am.

You work too #*^@ hard to hear someone (editors note:DO NOT USE SHORTHAND FOR OBSCENE WORDS!!!!!) around pretending they have a fish.

You spend too much money to hear someone complaining, wanting to go home after 4 hours of bad weather and no fish. If its raining, the weather sucks... if its too sunny, the weather sucks... if its too windy, the weather sucks... If its cold, the weather sucks... if its too hot, the weather sucks... The fish don't only eat when the weather is perfect for you... You'll live!

Its not always about catching... some people work all week long just to get away from it all for one weekend out of the month or one week out of the year.

When they bring an old steel tackle box which, when it gets wet, rusts on your carpet. You provide everything they offer nothing. They loose your lure and offer nothing. They don't get to go very often anymore.

* Throwing any litter in the lake, particularly cig butts.

* Folks who don't have patience with me when I stop fishing to grab litter out of the lake. Cans floating by are easy. I'll use my Frabill Powercatch to get crap off the lake bottom. If I can reach it, I go get it every time.

* Rude behavior toward other boats or folks on shore no matter what they did.

* Smacking lures to get rid of weeds.

* Being a loud mouth, especially frustrated yelling when something goes wrong.

* Sloppy mean drunks.

* Leaving baits laying around.

* Careless fish handling.

* Guests who cloud the boat interior with bug spray, including rods, exposed lures and the face of my fish finder.

* Folks who fail to bring rainsuits, shades or other essential gear.

******************************************************************************

Two quickies I LIKE about folks I fish with...

* Papajoe saying, "Hey man, I just hallucinated a follow."

* Hitting the bar with EsoxLady for many ta-kill-ya shots and then losing a $100 bet to a guy who, it turns out, COULD find and wear a tiny pink thong within 60 seconds of me yelling the bet across the bar. (Peg, did I send you that pic of him shooting us the moon with his nards hanging out all over the place?)

Without a doubt casting over me. A couple times in a day, no problem, a couple times in an hour, I'm going to want to kick you in by lunch time.

I will always leave good casts open, so that we can work together to fish more effectively, especially when you might have less experience. And then you wind up and ignore the money spot winging one up the shoreline over my line no where near where the fish likely was.

Another real irritant is when I'm working back into a narrow saddle or bay, and I have to get back into the corner before I can turn the boat so we can reach where the fish usually come from. The wind is probably blowing in and right before I swing the boat, you turn and throw a mother of a cast up the backside cutting me off so I can't turn the boat as we are now drifting into the rocks or more likely on top of the fish because your line is inches from the trolling motor. If we are going through a spot one way and we should fish both sides to cover it, then I will probably say something to that effect. Otherwise don't throw out the backside just to get a cast ahead of mine. If you really think I'm front-ending you, but you don't really know the spot, say something. I'd be happy to discuss the best method for covering the spot.

Complaining! Like someone said, saying "Darn it's freaking hot out here" when it is, is understandable. But whining about spots or conditions for hours just makes it miserable for all of us. Might as well start second guessing everything we're doing. That usually helps. Most days muskie fishing is simply a test of endurance, not a riddle to be solved, so buck up and just try to enjoy it.

If we are on a trip in Canada, and we're going to be twenty miles away from camp by mid-day, bring what you need with us in the morning and don't expect us to spend an hour driving back to camp because you forgot your raingear or whatever.

Most days I'll put up with just about anything including these "habits" and not comment on my annoyance, but you can expect my attitude to change as the day progresses and your behavior continues. You'd have to hit all my buttons in pretty quick order for me to lose it and go off on you. A fishing trip is the best meter of compatibility that I've ever seen in my life. If you can make it through a week with someone, especially on a muskie trip, then you'll likely be good friends any other time.  That's how I realized that my ex-wife and I really weren't right for eachother, and how I know that my new wife and I will be together forever.

Not in any order:
1) Eats Bean Burritos at Chipotle Grill night before fishing.
2) Throws antique creek chub pikie minnows all day with hooks sharpened down to nubs.
3) Turns up heat to 120 degrees in motel room.
4) Bends the tails down too far on his Suicks.
5) Gets more follows than anyone I've ever fished with.
