Found this taped to my computer this AM- Thought you might enjoy a laugh. I guess this is the typical impression of most wive's whose husband's muskie fish & never bring home any fish!

"What do you mean you spent $1500 & a 7 days in Canada and didn't bring home any fish!".

Have fun!

You guys got nothin'...

In the 4 years I was with my ex girlfriend I went fishing exactly ONE time, count it, ONE. We fought for two days beforehand because "you'd rather take a day off of work to go fishing than spend it with me waaahh" and "what if I need to get a hold of you" (this was before I had a cell phone) etc.

Then I came home to her all pissed off with her arms all folded "So... How was FISHING?! Did 'ya catch any FISH? Did you have FUN? Looks like you did you're all tan! Wanna know what I did all day???"

(I can guess, you spent the first half on the phone with your mother crying about what a horrible boyfriend I am because I ran off to go fishing, then you called your sister and cried some more...)

Then there's my friend who has a really nice boat, and fishes maybe 5 days a year because the rest of the time his wife says "you're WHAT? No, you ain't going anywhere. You're stayin here...."

I know you guys are just being silly but man, if your wife/girlfriend tolerates you fishing all of the time and all you get is made fun of you're LUCKY.

Yeah, I had to release one like that too. It's alright, it was just a starter marriage.

I always wonder why you guys even hang out with women like that? Believe it or not, there are women out there that love to go fishing.

Next time, ask them if they like fishing before...you pay for the motel room.

Priceless!
I gotta agree with the Why are you with her, as well as the practice marriage posts. lol.
I spent two marriages with women like that. I finally learned that I would NEVER, EVER get married again, unless Imet one who not only got it, but SHARED it with me. Thanx Lori (lolleitta), for being everything to me!
I'm in my third Marriage, I'm a trained professional. LOL!

I can relate to Esoxaddict. We must have dated the same woman. I ran into this type of thing with mine countless times. Fortunately, I only spent 2 1/2 years with this kind of stuff from her. Even that was way too long. That ended in 2001 and it's been heaven on Earth without her since!!

My wife doesn't fish with me, but is very supportive of my addiction to musky hunting. I've been chasing muskies for 18 years and she still makes jokes about never bringing any fish home. I guess I am lucky. We've been married 29 years and I,ve been able to fish and hunt as much as I wanted as long it fit into our budget. I pretty much fish every weekend during the season, with a week at LOTW in July. She is also very tolerant of my lure buying addiction. The other day she asked if I needed any rods or reels or equipment for the boat before the season. ( I'm still working on the list )
We've raised 3 daughters that have hunted and fished with me, but none of them got hooked on musky fishing.

I',m one of the lucky ones.

Man you guys, how do you spend that long with women that won't let you fish? I have an uncle that was a very devoted outdoorsman have the same thing happen to him. He was a huge hunter, and dated an animal loving tree hugger type for over a year. To give you an idea, she would go pick all the nightcrawlers off the sidewalks when it rained so they didn't get stepped on...

I have been with my girlfriend for over 2 1/2 years, and she LIKES IT that the things I like to do are hunt and fish. When she has the time, and I'm not putting in too long of a day she'll get in the boat with me to fish a little and just enjoy the ride. Guess I better put a ring on that finger because I didn't realize how few there are out there like her!

Greg- I'm one of the lucky ones too! Given my day job stress, she knows muskie fishing keeps me sane! She came to the Madison Fishing Expo a couple years ago and watched me interacting with folks in our ZaltNAD booth. She told me later that she then fully realized just how much I love fishing & muskies. I'm very fortunate- she never ask's how much I'm spending or why I do it! March 27th will be 15 years together. One of our first dates was early spring fishing for 1-2 lb bullheads. Wine, cheese & crackers for snacks. That is, between watching the sunset, catching fish & other activities! Even though she's not really a fisher person, she's always given me my space. Three kids (between our first marriage's) and 4 grand kids later. Felicia & Billy (20 & 31) like to fish muskies as do Jazmyn & Xavier (11 & 8). Brittanie & Hunter are coming up ( 7 & 6).

With family activities, I don't get to go every weeknd but now I do manage to try and slide 3 weeks of dedicated vacation for myself each year, i.e., mostly chasing muskies. This year it's a late June trophy Walleye/Muskie trip to Canada, Late September Canadian Flyin for trophy Muskie, and the MF Presque Isle trophy outing at the end of October. Obviously from the cartoon she has a pretty good sense of humor about my fanatical addiction to chasing muskies.

Have fun!

was married and now divorced ... fishing and hunting weren't the "cause" but i've already found that the time i've shared either on the boat or on the ice fishing with my kids over the years has built a bond not just between us but between the kids and the water and fish that have become a part of them. we have shared placement and i find that the kids continue to do everything they can to get on the water ... even more fun now without the "distraction" ... so, a message to the women who don't appreciate the games we play outdoors ... you don't know what your missing! ... and a message to the dads who head out on the water .... bring the kids with you!

casting is fun for kids of all ages, playing with the bait in the boat is a blast and let them do whatever they want, snacks (healthy ones) and drinks (gatoraide etc...) are a free-for-all in the boat ... make it fun for them and you'll have a blast. i've been out on the water with up to 7 kids in the boat sucker fishing and it's a great time to learn about what they are doing in school, who they are hanging out with and the time on the water is a whole lot better than time for them looking for something to do ... unfortunately in some cases if you don't give kids a positive outlet ... they'll find the alternative quickly.

Those of you who have been through it know what I mean when I say this:

It's hard to justify leaving a woman behind so you can go fishing more. It really makes you question what your own priorities are, if they're messed up, if you're too selfish, and if she's right when she says you care more about your hobbies than her feelings. When its a woman who wants to spend the rest of her life with you its even harder. The idea of a marriage, kids, a family, a purpose... To sacrafice that because you want to fish more is a sure sign you have a lot of growing up to do.

In the end though, fishing is a part of who we are. And if who we are isn't compatible with who our girlfriend is, than marrying her is NOT a good idea. (all the divorced guys are nodding their heads thinking "yah, no $^%^!")

Good advise to get it ALL out in the open BEFORE you even start dating. This is the way that it is now and forever will be.Done.If she walks, let her go.You can't change who you are for anybody, or it will come back in the end.I'm a lucky man, as my girlfriend of 16 months can chuck a Mag Dawg with the best of 'em and not whimper or complain once. And she's a buck 15,soaking wet. Minnesota women rock! Steve

No, it isn't. Not a woman like the one you're talking about.

You said it yourself, you went fishing ONE time in 4 years. It's not like you were gone every weekend.

My wife is great...she never gets mad when I go fishing...as long as I dont push it. If I'm gone every weekend for a month, I have some butt kissing to do. BUt, for the most part she is cool with it.

There is a difference between a woman that just wants to spend time with you and one that wants to inhibit you from having any fun without her. Sounds to me like you had the second one.

For Valentine's Day I was given a packet with info about a trip booked for the two of us to go ice fishing on LOTW the folowing week. She even contacted my boss and already set up my time off. How cool is that? She's a keeper!

Make it fun, I call her a Shumway Fuzzy Duzzit and she laughs!!!

Treat them right (let them shop) and you'll get treated well in return.

Fishing and hunting has always been my priority HOBBY. It has never been a priority over family commitment. In our 29 years together I have given up a lot of hobby time by choice. Now I have a wife that lets me fish and hunt, and 3 grown daughters that like doing outdoors things with me. It's not like I leave my wife home every weekend. We have a cottage on the Three Lakes Chain and she likes being there.

Never put your hobbies before your family. Maybe I am spoiled ( my wife says I am ) because my wife didn't think she should change me just because I said "I do".

Last fall for our 39th wedding anniversary, my wife gave me a card with a picture of a guy walking out the door with his rods and reels, tackle box and fishing hat. It showed his wife sitting on the couch. It read:

You know you have a successful marriage when you don't care what he does...
Just so long as you don't have to go along.

We love our time together, but we also value our time apart pursuing differing interests. Out of the deck...I picked an Ace!

Funny incident this morning- (5 minutes ago). Go out & let dog's out of the kennel, then I go upstairs to get a cup of coffee. The CBS Early show has segment on about "laundry". The reporter & guest/expert are discussing washer's and dryer's. I don't see Doreen, so I say out loud, "what's this!" "I hear -> "SHUT UP!, I don't talk during your fishing shows!"

She's standing in the sun room where I can't see her - folding her laundry & watching the special report! BTW her laundry room is her domain- no one else is allowed in there- Talk about a Shrine!. At least she occasionally let's me use her broom closet/elevator. Yes- she also has a fully functional broom closet/elevator (4'X6' hydraulic elevator). I'm also not allowed in her 10' x 12' walkin closet!

And some folks think us big muskie guy's are a bit peculiar- she just now hollered downstairs about another segment - "How to talk to your man about their brain compared to your brain"! It's a hilarious morning!!!!!!!!!! ROFLMAO

Have fun!

Why would a committed Muskie fisherman get into (and then stay) in a relationship with a woman that actually objected to, or hassled him, about going fishing?

Persons with such traits are haunted by their own personal insecurities, are "dripping with need," and without question such difficulties also rear their ugly heads in other aspects of the relationship as well.

Seems to me that's like voluntarily stepping into a bear trap.....

Yes, I do believe that acceptance that we Muskie fish should stand as the "personal litmus test" when considering the possibilities that any future relationship might hold.

My girlfriend is still learning how to cast, though I suspect that minor detail should be worked out soon and she'll then be putting them in the boat ..... post-haste.

Al, Bob and Greg,

I have not been married that long it will be 18 years in April. I've got to say this though your post make me feel good about my life. I too married the greatest woman on the planet and with the way a lot of my friends are getting divorce or just plain unhappy. I love her more today than the day I married her and will love her more 40 years from today. It makes me feel that marriage, family and the outdoors does'nt have to be like oil and water. My wife God bless her is as far from an outdoors person as you can get. Her ideal of roughing it is a weekend at the Holiday Inn with no pool and you know what thats fine with me. I knew what I was getting into when I got married; but so did she. We have always looked at our differences as strengths and not weakness. In our case opposites attracted and have stayed together for 18 years. I could not see myself without her. It just would'nt be any fun.
