| Hey guys, I am a college student and have been offered some work to try and make a difference, and well, an assignment at the same time. The assignment I have received was to write three letters to an elected official(s) (politics... yay!) concerning an issue of which holds importance to me. I havent been able to come up with anything other than the Gull Lake stocking debate, and even at that, who would I send the letter to??
I couldnt figure a better place than the first with peoples ideology being so similar in function. Im not trying to start a huge politics debate cause im well not to thrilled talking politics. Things usually end up heated, spit flies, veins start to swell... etc. I am simply asking for a few ideas of topics to research and if you do know who an elected official that would deal with such an issue that also. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Location: The desert | Stricter regulation on ballast dumping in the great lakes which is a major cause of invasives
More funding for water quality improvement
Thats all I can think of fishing/musky related but here are some other topics that make that assignment pretty easy (what year are you, reminds me of assignments I had freshman/sophmore year?)
Stricter Boarder Laws to reduce illegal immigration ( I have one of these written you could have)
Stricter drunk driving laws
Pollution control
Renewable energy research
A push to switch to Hydrogen fuel or more E-85
This is an easy assignment, dont think too hard on it. |

Location: Minnesota | Pointerpride has a great idea, especially with the recent outbreak and spread of VHS in the Great lakes, that is Viral Hemorrhagic Scepitcemia. I know that in Lake Saint Clair they are attributing 5000 muskie deaths to this disease. The way that this disease spreads is mainly through ballast water, and now water currents.
There are numerous articles out on this topic and since they involved some of the largest frestwater resources in the world, there are many people that you could write to or contact regarding this issue.
Best of Luck,
Dan |

Location: Athens, Ohio | In Ohio, there's currently a debate about setting muskie size limits. If your assignment to contact politicians is not limited to your state, PM me and I'll send you links to a couple websites where the debate rages on. You can read the pros and cons and decide how you'd wish to proceed. m |

| Pointer= Im a junior at Bemidji State, but a Biology major which may explain why my politics classes arent real far up the chain. I figured with doing research and such it may not be bad to have a little politics background because of the politics that would result from future research being done.
Im gonna get started on some research with those topics!!! Thanks Guys! |

Oh, if you only knew the weight of the words you just put down...
Aside from the wisdom you have imparted, have you given much thought to what level of government you wish to address? In my experience, if you want to vent, contact the state and Federal government. If you want to be heard, contact local government. County commissioners have the attention of state legislators, whereas we as citizens, generally do not. Strike up a good working relationship with your local elected officials and your issues will be taken seriously for the most part.
Have fun.

| You could write letters to 3 legislators explaining how larger size limits contribute to increased tourist dollars. Muskie guys travel a long way for a shot a big fish, and we spend a lot of money. |

| Regarding VHS, write a letter to Minnesota Congressman James Oberstar. He is going to introduce legislation in Washington to help stop the spread of the disease. There is a story about this on startribune.com. |
