VERY near Duluth? about your only options are the St Louis River or some of the smaller lakes in extreme NW Wisconsin....

Island Lake about 15 minutes North of Duluth has a solid population of muskies, which are coming of age and 50's are not out of the question. If you are willing to go farther North, Vermillion is about an hour and a half from Duluth, and well its Vermillion. One of Minnesota's premiere fisheries.
The St. Louis river has some muskies in it and there are some guys that really do well down there. I have seen lots of nice fish come out of there and is definitely a fun alternative from fishing the lakes.
Hope this helps

Dan

Yep... Vermillion is close enough I'd say... your call. However, if you want an "almost automatic", try Dumbbell Lake, north of Beaver Bay. Lots of amazing structure, islands, sunken islands, reefs, and plenty of muskies, although their size is a bit lacking. Really a fun lake to fish, but use your map/gps for your lower unit's sake... and try a Suick.

Thanks guys, Vermillion was on the radar anyway, just wondered if there was anything really worth while, probably only fish 1 day while we're up there.
Thanks again.

Definetly some nice fish in Island Lake. Once the temp heats up they are hard to find though. This 47 is my biggest..hope to pop a 50 this year!!

Nice! I havn't fished there yet. Are there a lot of rock reefs? I have a Navionics chip so it probably wouldn't be a problem.

There are a couple out in no mans land but they do get marked otherwise they are pretty much tied to structure close to islands or shore. As long as you are in the middle of the basins for your main travel you will be fine as long as the water level is normal. I always steer clear of islands though until i can use the trolling motor around them to get familiar with each area. There are some rocks close to islands that are as big as your boat. Especially that first island on the right on the east basin.

Lundbob and JKahler,

I just moved back to Duluth last November and am in need of someone to fish with up here. If either of you, or anyone else from Duluth, needs someone to work the net drop me a line. Teach me Island and/or the St. Louis and I'll teach you a couple other lakes.

Hammskie, what happened to Dumb Bell Lake fish size? I was stationed in Finland in 79-80, and we fished the lake quite a bit. Saw some very big fish in there, but never caught one. I seem to remember shallow water between the bells, very clear, rocks and boulders on the bottom, and some big ski's hanging out there. Didn't know squat about ski's back then. Actually had a set of twins from Two Harbors on the brain at the time! hehehe

The lake is loaded with the Shoepack strain of fish, smaller than your L.L. Strain that is common is the majority of MN Lakes. They have both strains in there now so you may get a bigger fish once in a while.

Hi Shawn,

If you are looking in the Duluth Area, the St. louis river is your best bet, lots of #s & a chance at a big one. If you are looking for that top end go the extra Hour to Vermilion. I have a Guide Service called Northland Muskie Adventures with 4 of the best guides in the Northland. We spend everyday on the water and put many monster fish in the boat. Check out our website.
http://www.northlandmuskieadventures.com

I would be happy to take you out if you are looking for a guide up here, I will put you on some monster muskies on the river or up on Vermillion, but its up to you to get them to bite.

Take Care

Dustin knows Vermillion, and knows how to make friends there, that is for sure. How can I not like a guy who brings me donuts and coffee to my pickup truck camper at the boat landing at 5 AM the morning after I met him(after he joined us for a fairly long evening/early morning of fish stories and Manhattens at the camper..)....hehehehe.

Just wanted to let you guys know that Lakemaps just released their new 2008 Minnesota chip and one of the new 1 foot contoured lakes is Island Reservoir. They actually put a sample image of it on the "buy it" page. I'll be ordering this tonight!!

When I checked the list it doesn't show Island Reservoir as a new mapped lake? Is there list outdated or maybe they just have a hard copy map at 1' contours?

Unless i'm not reading it right here is a link to the chip and you can click on "Download the Product Lake List"link and Island Reservoir is listed as a 1 foot high definition lake now. And the original link i posted shows Island Lake Reservoir as a 1 foot map.

I ordered a new LCX-27C and the new chip on friday, you can sell alot of crap on ebay and turn it into something nice, so i'll be able to mess around with it as soon as it gets here. Should give me something to do for the next couple weeks till i can get my boat out of storage. So much structure out there, i fish the lake every week and i still have alot to learn. I assume they were out there last summer scanning the lake. It was a good year to do it as the lake was at normal water levels most of the year.

We must think alike as I too sold a bunch of stuff on Ebay and bought a LCX27c. Does the map on the chip say what the water levels were when they made it. With the flucuation of water levels in that reservoir one has to do the math alot.

As soon as i get it i will see. I emailed them last week and found out the 2007 chip came out in Oct of 2006 so i doubt they did it summer 2006. I'm sure they did it last summer. But their tech support was quick to respond so i bet an email to them would get an answer.

Wow what a fantastic map. It's right on the money in all the spots i usually hit. I can't wait to get on the water with it and start messing around with it. This is the first GPS i've ever had. I'm glad i sprung for the bigger screen on the 27C. I'm surprised they got Island Lake as a high definition lake. Fish lake is more popular for locals fishing wise anyways and they don't even have that map on the chip at all. But i never fish it so i'm happy. Definitely worth the investment.

Nice to see this one come up again. I actually ended up fishing in Hayward last year, then going to Duluth for my business there. Went out with Dave Dorazio and had a good time, even got a fish. I will be up in Duluth again this year, maybe for a couple days, so will most likely be looking for a guide, but not sure yet. Thanks guys.
