My partner and i are looking for a good place to fish just over the border around the end of may or first of june (shortly after iceout) for pike and walleyes. my parter has fished out of PerchBayResort in Kenora for the last three years, fishing the river system below Lake of the Woods. It doesnt matter to me where we go,i have never been. we will be driving and taking our own boat. dont get me wrong,i still want to see some of my favorite fish while im up there, but doesnt have to be a priority. we want to catch numbers of fish, but also want a shot at a trophy. if you have any advice, please post it here as i will print it off to decide with the partner what to do. thanks...........Fred.

P.S. what can i expect for weather(temp) up there around that time of year also.

The rainy river should be awesome around then. Plenty of eyes and a legit shot at a trophy. I've always wanted to go just no time availabe to run up there. If you go take pics.

You had better not be fishing for muskies before the third Saturday in June (this year June 16th). If you do you may find yourself talking to an Ontario CO who won't understand that you are fishing for northerns. It's your word against his with a Canadian judge, I don't like the odds.

Lots of great spots for walleyes and smallies during that time of year, but leave the muskies alone, they are making babies.

If you are mainly interested in walleye, you may want to go to a walleye discussion forum to ask your question.

OutdoorsFIRST First has a walleye website, too. See upper left corner and select "walleye".

I don't think DougJ means you shouldn't fish for northerns, but if you are slinging muskie sized baits with 100 lb. test line you are probably going to be in trouble with Canada's conservation officers. The time of year you are going to be up there is a great time for smallmouth action. I particularly like to throw small soft plastic baits and spinnerbaits up in the shallows. You will not only pick up smallies, but even walleyes and northerns doing this. It's a great time of year for action. If you catch a muskie by accident, don't bring it in the boat....just release it in the water. Once you have the muskie in your boat it's consider in your possession legally and if caught you WILL be fined, and could lose your boat and tackle and even your car. It has happened to others. Sabaskong Bay is beautiful and will provide great action. Good Luck.
