How soon after ice out do you start fishing for muskies? Ice should be off the small lakes here soon and recent stockings have muskies in the mid-to-upper 30's in some small lakes in Nebraska. Two near me are very small lakes--less than 100 and about 300 acres, mud bottom, good weeds during the year. When would you start and what tactics and baits? I'd assume smaller twitch baits like 6" jakes. Would you push up as shallow as possible on south facing bays? Never fished for skies in the spring so any info would be helpful.

Head for the backs of the bays and look in shallow after the sun has warmed the water in there a bit, south face will be warmest. Sand flats with shallow reeds seem to warm nicely too, and hold early fish.

Twitch baits and jigs work for me that early, and don't forget the Rattletrap...

Steve's right, there's a lot going on in early spring...a couple of other points to consider...topwaters will work, just use them SLOW...twitch minnows, shallow cranks like the Shallow Invader, Shallow Raider, and Cranes are good, but don't forget the universal musky lure...the white spinnerbait. Make repeat casts to obvious cover, work slow and thorough--and keep your eyes open and your sensors on...be alert for any indication of a fish.

Good luck!!
