 | I just ordered 2 custom 9'ers ("The Twins") using the new XXX Heavy St. Croix blanks from Professional Edge. I really like Shimano reels. But thought I'd throw it out here for advice. Definitely have to have a "clicker" for suckers. But I will also be using these to cast heavy plastic baits, etc.
So what would you put on these rods & why?

 Thanks in advance.
 Al

 | I'm putting a 7000iHSN on mine. A tough reel made for a tough rod. I like the HSN for picking up slack when ripping Dawgs, etc. Has a clicker for your suckers too. |

 | Luke- Thanks for the input. I would have thought more MF members would have had some opinions.
I do use Shimano exclusively now, i.e., Curado 200's (5) and spinning reels (4). I really like the drag performance- very smooth ( Except for the Curado 200's when the temps get to 32F or below). The lack of a clicker and the fact they slip more as it gets colder is why I posted this request for advice. I am willing to consider any reel out there. Heck the no brainer for me would be Calcutta 400's. But if something out there is just as good or even better/cheaper for the application why not consider it. At ~150 ea. the 7000iHSN's look attactive.

I should have also said I really prefer a thumb bar versus push the lever type reel.

 Thanks
 Al

 | Al, if you need a clicker you should check out the Luna 300. I have a couple old Millionaire CVX-253's and love them. Very smooth and tough...no plastic inside. I had no idea the 7000's cost $150...that seems a bit high for 1950's technology. |

 | I'm not sold on the 7000's yet. The pre-Taiwan models are awesome, but I have heard of and had myself a few problems with the ones made over the past couple of years. I'm going to wait on the 7000i, though I agree that it LOOKS good.
For me, the reliable reels are the older Garcias and the Calcuttas. I've heard good things about Penn.

 | I believe the reason there were not to many opinions here is that this subject was "beaten to death" over the winter. But, for what its worth, I also would go with a 7000 series reel. I'm kind of surprised that some of the reel manufacturers have not offered a 7000 sized reel. Maybe they feel the market is not there, but I disagree. Some comments were made about Millionaire reels and my response would be as soon as those reels give 25 to 30 years of service like several of my Ambassaduers, then I would listen. Thumbs up to 1950's technology! And why did Daiwa stop making cvx reels anyway? Was it because a better reel, the luna, took its place? Kdawg |

 | So what would you put on these rods & why? regardless of brand recommendations (Godzilla vs King Kong), i think that most people will agree that you want to look for something with the right speed for what you're doing.
big rubber and jerkbaits? look for at least 5:1 gear ratio to pick up slack quickly.
