This winter here in SouthEast Wisconsin we have had great ice thickness and plenty of snow cover. In past years where this happened we had very low weed growth for the opener and most of May. Almost everywhere we looked for weeds recently they were all layed down. It is hard to remember the last time the weeds were so layed down.

I personally like when this happenes. It makes the fishing easer in the Spring. Find the best cover close to the spawning areas and your on fish. I can't wait. Bring on the opener!!!

If you ice fish whats it like in your area this winter?

Weeds are up there and not much snow. Was the snow fall up in MN low this season? I know you guys just got hammered recently but before that was it a mild winter as far as snow fall?

Cap'n, I love it when it happens on milfoil lakes, it gives you some extra spring fishing where you can actually fish over the mat instead of around it. Fish seem to like it too. On lakes where cabbage is the main weed source, it does just the opposite. I've seen some lakes in Vilas that went from lush, full broadleaf cabbage beds in the summer one year, to sparse, shorter and more clumps than beds the next year. Lack of sunlight will do that.

Mike,

Even after the hammering last week, we're still around a foot below average for this point in the year and about 20 inches or so below the yearly total average.

We have had barely snow any until the last week or so.

I found that the more ice and snow the less weeds. Clear ice and now snow = lots of milfoil and a choked out year is on the way. I am looking forward to this season. Beaver is right on, the cabage will hold and the milfoil will drop with all this snow and ice.

What snow and ice, she was 90 and sunny on sunday, nine in the boat biggest pushing 60". Coming home sure sucked yesterday, I might have forgotten how to cook. I think this amount of late snow could slow early season weed growth, with almost 40" of snow in last week. like Luke said we are still behind average snow fall, temps are climbing and snow could be gone soon. Ground and Ice had very little snow cover until the last 2 storms. We will wait and see what the next 2 weeks bring. Currently frost was 36".

The weeds are high up there because of the lack of snow until just lately. High weeds for you guys this season I bet.
