Beware if you have a boat, truck, or even trolling motor for sale; the internet is alive with scammers trying to convince you they are real buyers...an adventure in receiving a $5000.00 check from California and England.

All I wanted was to get this guy to mail me a check. Anyone know how much that stamp cost?

AHHH, never mind, found it. It cost the guy a little less than a buck to send that letter.

A very real deal, but also very humorous! Some great grammar and spelling on there!

Guts, are you the head of the scam???? Just kidding!

Jonesi, you'll take a check?
Great article Steve, thanks for helping us watch out for this.

Now, while we're talking, I have the opportunity to inherit a large amount of moneys from my Nigerian uncle who died with no will and i was wondering....? m

Aren't cashier's checks usually typewritten? Not hand written?

I got one when I was selling my boat. He was an agent, and wanted to buy the boat sight unseen, and wanted my bank account info. I told him it was cash only for him. I never heard from him again. hehehe

I have seen this scam going on for years. There was a special on tv a short time ago (Nightline ...I think) about this exact type of scam. BEWARE!

I've had two guys in the past two weeks offer me $29,000 ofr out boat and told me to take what I need for the boat and give the rest to the pickup guy. I was like, when the pickup guy delivers me cash, then I will do so. Never heard from them again.

Steve

You may want to forward all of the details and a copy of the check to the States Attorney. They may be interested.

I handed everything i had over to the local PD and they passed it on to the state, the local Chief said about 2 months later that they get a call for this about everyday and theres not much they can do.

And the irony here is that if you weren't on your toes and a bank cashed such a check, you'll be responsible for the whole amount when the fraud comes up later.

I finally sold a home computer on craigslist.com today. During the past couple months, you would not believe the number of similar scam emails I received. I try not to even respond so they don't have a valid email address to try to Google any further info on me... and don't give out SSN, bank info, or eBay or PayPal account info, of course.

Some state and federal contacts to report fraud and other helpful info:
