If you had a choice between a 115 Mercury ELPTO or a 90HP Honda on the same model boat which would you prefer and why?

Well first off, why wouldnt you compare a Honda 115 to Mercury 115? One major difference I can see is that Honda motors are heavier motors. A Honda 90 weighs as much as a Mercury 115, almost exactly the same. A Honda 115 is a considerable amount of weight heavier weighing in at just under 500lbs versuses a Mercury 115 weighing in at 386lbs. So I would say if you compared apples to apples, weight would be one of your biggest issues. Both are great engines, heard a lot of good about Honda but kinda have dropped off the radar in the technology department. Haven't seen anything new from them or ways they have worked to get better. Another thing to keep in consideration, yes I might be a bit bias to Mercury, however, and people can give me a hard time all they want about this but if you were ever to have a problem with a Mercury and your on a trip many miles away, the chance of having a Mercury dealer around is much more likely than say a Honda dealer. Not to mention, you might also get a mile or two more speed wise out of a Merc 115 than a Honda 90. Just my thoughts.

The reason I compare a 90 Honda to a 115 Merc is I own the Honda and am thinking about a boat with the Merc on it. I wanted opinions on the Merc probably more then the Honda. Is it worth trading up in year and HP for that motor? Price difference is about $7,000 for a 3 year newer Merc and a baot with a console as opposed to a tiller.

Pepper,

That's totally your call on what to do. I love the Mercury 115 4stroke. I've run that motor for five seasons, and yet to have one problem with it! I will say, I got excellent gas milage and it sure was quiet. However, I know the Honda's are quiet too, but don't know too much past that. All I'm saying is that I highly suggest it, but is it worth an extra $7,000? Not sure, it would also depend on the boat for me. Do you want a console or a tiller from what your trying to figure out.

I don't think the Merc is the 4-stroke, it's a 2-stroke, and it's a 2+2, meaning it runs on 2 cyl's below about 1800 RPM, and then the other two cylinders are enabled. It's a carbed motor, like the Honda, so It may be a bit cold blooded. It will run rougher at idle, and will smoke. It's a bulletproof motor, and there are tons of them out there.

ELPTO= Electric Start. Long Shaft, Power tilt & Trim, and Oil Injected. The O kinda gives it away as a 2-stroke.

Same model boat, you will have to decide if you want to give up the tiller for the console. Hole shot and top end will be better with the Merc. It will be louder, too. You'll be giving up the control of the tiller, for the ease and comfort of the console.

Tough decision for some, easy for others.
