I am wanting to start recording my brothers fishing trips to possibly put togather a video. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with in this area and if so what type of camera or cameras are best suited for this type of application (mini dv, dvd, hard drive, etc.) Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

OutdoorsFIRST uses a Canon Mini DV GL1. It's an older model of the Canon Prosumer products, but really works well. An XL1S is in the future, but not needed at this point.

I also use a JVC and a Canon Mini DV in a hand held, simple unit. For your application, if you don't need wireless michrophones and the like, a $300 video camera will certainly do the job.

If you are looking for high quality video, you need to have a cap camera that is compatible with your main camera, and most of those in the hand helds don't have the port you need to hook one up. Wireless cap cameras do work really well, but the camera they attach to is pretty expensive, if you are looking for AVI or other formats that allow for quality video production.

Do the mini DVD cameras also put out in AVI or other format besides DVD?

The files created by the editing program can be stored/edited/etc in a number of formats off the DV tape. Most of the video used for web or home movie applications by rank amateurs like me is encoded to WMV or the like.

I found this setup on ebay. This seems to be workable if the format is right for editing. It records on a hard drive or disk to be downloaded.

The quality will be pretty poor, but yes, you could use that system.
