Hey guys, this one's on a personal level.

A friend of mine, tow truck driver, was hit by a hit and run driver yesterday morning about 6:30 am. The vehicle continued northbound on I-39 from Portage. Accident happened by the exit near the prison that you can see from the Interstate. My buddy is currently in the hospital in Madison - Critical Condition....

In any case, I copied the following information from channel3000.com and this is about all I know right now. I'm off 'til Thursday so I won't know any more until at least then. Here's the information. If you know of anything, please call the number listed. I would personally appreciate any help.

Authorities Search For Driver In Hit-And-Run
Truck Operator Seriously Injured On I-39

POSTED: 7:55 pm CST February 27, 2007

PORTAGE, Wis. -- The Wisconsin State Patrol said it is looking for the driver of a car that hit and seriously injured a tow truck operator on Interstate 39 on Tuesday.

Authorities said the worker was struck just before 6:30 a.m. near Portage.

The truck operator was in the process of removing a car from the median when a car in the northbound lanes hit him and left the scene, authorities said.

Investigators are looking for a 2000 to 2006 Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable four door that is beige or gold in color. Authorities said the car is missing its driver's side mirror and also has left front wheel well damage.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call either the Wisconsin State Patrol at 608-846-8521 or Columbia County Crime Stoppers at 800-293-TIPS.

They found the car, so it should just be a matter of time now. Let's see if they claim "I thought it was a deer" like all the other DUIs seem to do.

Scott- That really sucks! Hope they find the driver-> "I thought it was a deer" doesn't get it! If that was the case he/she should have stopped to gut it out. Freakin' people just don't slow down enough & give emergency services folks & emergency vehicles enough room. Absolutely no excuse for driving off! Hope they throw the keys away on him/her.

I hope your buddy makes a 100% recovery. Our prayers are with him & his family.

Scott, I wish all the best for your friend and a speedy revovery. Two weeks ago a really bad accident happened 2 miles from the house. 9 people in a small 5 passenger car, a 23 year old driver and the rest 14-17 years old. 2:20am slammed a tree coming from a party, 4 died at the scene and another died later. All from the same high school. The driver is in a wheel chair and she is probably looking at some serious prison time.

Thanks for all the wishes guys.

From the limited information I've gotten so far, my buddy Norm, had two badly mangled legs and was in surgery for literally 2 days. News is that he will most likely lose one of his legs. That's all I know right now.

Thanks for all the help too.

Holy crap Theedz that is terrible. I hope Norm comes through all of this OK.

Take it from somebody who has had a similar experience recently. His attitude and the people around him are going to make a huge difference in his recovery. I wish him all the best.

And, I hope they scumbag that did this pays!

It's unbelievable what people do... Honestly is it that difficult to slow down? Is it that difficult to get into another lane? This kind of driver error is completely avoidable, but with todays distractions; cell phones, GPS, installed TV's, satellite radio. People just don't give the road their 100% attention. I've been in quite a few near misses when helping my communities direct traffic. I've heard of way to many stories of people getting killed while WORKING in on or near a road. The one thing that we can hope for is what Illinois has in place. If you kill a worker while driving it's a felony, the numbers of vehicle to worker accidents have declined greatly in that state. There needs to be a severe punishment for this POS who drove off.

Update-

As of yesterday, Thursday, very good news. They had very good circulation flow in the left leg which was the more severely damaged one. Because of the improved circulation, they think that they may be able to save the leg after all. After they got the circulation improved they then worked on the broken right leg. Norm was conscious and was coherent enough to sign the consent forms for more surgery. He has a long recovery ahead and I'm assuming that he will lose some use of his leg but things are looking as good as, actually better, can be expected right now.

They did recover the car that hit him and are working on getting the driver.

Thanks again for all the good wishes. Please remember the people that work out on the roads to make them safe for all of us. The cops, highway workers, tow truck driver's, fire and EMS personnel all appreciate you slowing down and moving over. Ask yourself "If it was my child, wife, mother, father, significant other etc, out there, would I be driving 70+ mph past them 3 feet away??" Thanks for any consideration guys/gals.

I'll keep you posted.

Scott

Scott,
Good to hear that things are lookin better.
Tonight on my way home there was an accident near Hwy. 67 on I-94. There was a car in the ditch on each side, a semi on the right and squad cars at the scene on both the left and right sides. Everyone was merging into one lane and I'm 25 feet in front of the accident and some jack A$$ cruises up fast and decides he is going to ride the left lane all the way up (except for my Tahoe that wasn't moving!) Give them some room and slow down out there!
Norm's incident is. the type of lesson that should be learned
