With the icefishing season for game fish coming to a close March 4th I was just thinking about whats next?

What is everyone doing to keep from going nuts?

I am on the lake every day after work and now it's almost done, whats a guys to do..............I am not going to hear FLAG, or TIP-UP unless I go out of town. The excuse of "there is only days left honey" is still working but wearing thin in my house hold. Kids are into getting out to the shack and playin on the wheelers while waiting for the walleyes to hit. Fresh fish frys, venison, brats, tv, cards, beer.........Bummer it's all coming to a end.

Now what?

It's SUNNFISH time! Crappies and gills are now the target until near ice out, then huge perch. There's always some kind of fishing to do, even in the north.

Yep, bluegills, crappies and perch! Great eating, and with the right tackle they can be fun. If you want to make it a challenge, fish lakes and areas that have BIG panfish. It might change your mind what you think about panfish. I love fishing walleyes during the open season through the ice, but sometimes it's nice not to have to deal with tip-ups, minnow buckets, etc.

Great. I find out it's almost over, and I never got out on the ice.

Slamr said he was going to call and we would go ice fishing. I waited, but he never called. He's probably been doing a lot of camping this winter.

Kevin

Wait until you see this one.

Open water fishing. I took a side trip today and saw 9 boats out fishing eyes. I about quit my job on the spot to go join them.

Well I'm hoping to have the new boat very soon so I will be frantically rigging away and usually by the second weekend in March I am making my first run over to Depere, to lay the smack down on some open water eyes! Wow does this weather ever give me the itch right now!

Just to let everyone know the season closes on March 4th, not March 1st. This is clearly stated in the regulations. Don't you think it would be strange to end a fishing season on a thursday. If you want to put away your tip ups for the year go ahead. That will just leave me with more room to put my tip ups. As far as what to do after the season closes, fish for panfish. They are as fun if not more fun than catching a pike, walleye, or bass through the ice on a tip up. Panfish are almost always biting and ultra-lite tackle they can put up a good fight. Also there still is a chance at hooking into a game fish while jigging. And they taste good.

Thanks for that info Mike. I forgot that they changed that date so it ended on a weekend. Only a few years ago they changed that. It was always stated through March 1st.

March 4th is the closer. Thanks Mike, I feel better now.

As for the pan fish, they are going to get beat up bad in March. We got plenty of ice and the pan fish bite has not got going here on Pewaukee yet. A few more warm sunny days will get them energized. Gills and crappies are a blast when you can walk around hole to hole and get action from most of the holes.

find where it stays open, and go. Extreme one, if you want to do a trip up here you got free room and board (bring yer own alcohol, though). Otherwise, get into custom painting.

Mike, Get yur booty down this way when the water opens up. Mid March hopefully. You don't even have to bring that monsterous boat of yours. Otherwise, there are plenty of browns and bows to go around if you're looking for open water fish.

Mike,

I spend half of march and all of April on the Fox Chain musky fishing. If you've never made the trip you should check it out this spring. Its closer than the Fox River and way more fun than gill or walleye fishing..

I am just glad I live on the WI River, where it doesn't close. I would go nuts!! Luckily, about that time, the steelhead and panfish bite are picking up steam at that time too. That said, if I lived in/near Milwaukee, I'd be hitting the streams and power plants wide open for the browns and steel!

If the ice is still safe on some of the harbors get out and slam some browns and steelies.
These are from yesterday.

When the snow "finally" leaves up at the cabin (north Iron county), which may not be toooo long (?), it's time to go scouting for new/additional deer huntng spots and do some shed hunting at the same time!! I have found some of my best spots when scouting in April...
