I recently bought my first double cowgirl and have not thrown anything like it before. I am wondering how this bait pulls through the water. Is it hard, easy, or average? The reel that I will be using is a Abu 6500 C3 spooled with 80lb PP. Just trying to figure out if Im going to have a hard time reeling this bait in.

used a couple of abu#60 records last year and reeled the cowgirls in with no problems, but the retreive was much better when i replaced one of the reels with a big game handle, fairly cheap fix.

I'd get a different reel. A 7000ICS would work much better. If a new reel isn't an option put a power handle on your 6500. The power handle makes a big difference when reeling in the double 10's.

I could be wrong but I think you can put the new nice rubber power handle abu has on their reels on that 6500..that would make a huge difference...that reel is 5.3 to 1 isn't it? It will be ok but it will fatigue you more in a long day as something with 4.1 to or up to 4.7 to 1...do a search or scroll back thru this forum as there were many threads on the better reels for throwing those big bucktails.
the Penn 975 is my favorite at 4.5 to 1, nice power handle, good size to palm etc.
The 7000ics is also decent but it is heavier and a bit larger profile than the Penn.

I've been using 7000 C3's for pretty much every bucktail/prop topwater I throw for the last 5 years. Cant beat 'em in my opinion.

I just picked up a new 7000iCS Pro Rocket to put on my bucktail rod for this year. IMO, they are the best reel there is for pulling big tails.

Do you think the spool release lever will be easy to get used to on the 7000i reels? Seems like a backward step getting rid of the push button.

I used the new 7000 for about a month at the end of the season...I got use to the lever just fine...I actually started to think it would be better in the long run as the push buttons tend to have problems engaging with a lot of use...

How well can you burn baits with 'em overall? I realize not so much with the big bucktails, but with the topwaters and smaller 'tails. I ask b/c I need a new multipurpose topwater bucktail reel?

In the latest edition of esox angler there is an article about this subject...titled "The Big Bucks are back" by Bruce Shumway...the 2 reels he suggests are the Abu 7000 style or a Quantum 410 Ex...has anyone ever heard of the Quantum 410 Ex and if so would this be another viable option as a reel for a the new big bait rods such as the St. Croix XXX Rod or Bulldawg Rods or the Professional Egde Rod?...

When Abu first came out with the new 7000's with the lever I thought it was a big mistake but after using it for a little bit I find that it like it more than the push button.

I agree I haven't used mine yet but i think it will be an improvement. Change is good. I have had many problems with the push buttons over the years.

Thanks for the info I do think I will be buying a power handle for my C3. Cant wait to throw my bait along with the new Spinnerbait i got from Musky Mayhem that also has a #10 blade.

I would save the money you are going to spend on the power Handle and would sell the C3 Reel if possible and get The 7000 ICS.. As the 6500c3 with or without the power handle just does not cut it... Henry

I agree, this was my first year throwing Cowgirls I used the Pro Rocket and got use to it quickly not only is it less strenus but the drag system is much better when it comes to handling bigger fish. Having a lever instead of push button is much more reliable acording to Chuck Brod who works on reels for a living. I good stiff 8ft rod helps also.

garcia reels with levers are garbage. i own 31 garcia reels and i have never had a problem with one until i purchased the 7000iC3. the spool shaft is narrowed to 1/2 diameter through the pinion gear, plastic release mechanism, weak anti reverse housing, too many re-engage points since crank is not perfectly balanced, and this is just the beginning. i have had 5 replacements from garcia since march on two reels. the lever would be ok on the new reels but not since the unbalance crank causes the reel to suddenly re-engage mid cast if bumped even the slightest. then the gearing shows signs of wear with every time this happens. under the load of a 48" muskie the spool will rub the frame since the spool shaft is half the diameter and the bearings are pushed out further. also since the drive sideplate is not one piece, the iar bearing's housing comes unlodged after what i consider minimal use. i tore the iar bearing out on a hookset on a 47" ski and sent it back. i am working with garcia's engineers to reform the design of the current 7000. my best advice would be to find a push button 7000 for cowgirls. effortless retrieve is all you will ever expect until you hook a toothy beast.
