I spent a few hours yesterday going over my equipment and am pleased with everything except my shallow running crankbaits. What brand works best for you? Any particular size/color best for clear water and for night? Thanks.

Otter,

Depends on what you want to do with them....

My preferences for Cranking or twitching are:

Slammers 5-7"
Jakes/Grandmas in all sizes (round lip = wobble)
Crane Baits
Musky Inovations Shallow Invader (good pitchback bait)
Buchers Shallow raiders (square lip = higher vibration %)
Bagleys (Great Milfoil bait, thanks Jason..:) )

For Trolling (I don't troll unless I have to)

Slammers
Jakes/Grandmas
Buchers Shallow Raiders (jointed or straight)

For night fishing I love Buchers jointed "night shinner" and a 8" Jake that I painted flat black with glow eyes.

Like any bait, you get some good ones and some not so good ones and either have to tune them or figure out which ones work best for each applications. Better quality wood baits like Slammers will have better consistency than others.

Colors.....depends on the body of water/conditions but if you are limited to the number you can have, start with Perch, Firetiger, Cisco, Orange/gold and build your collection from there.

Hope this helps,

Mark

You can't go wrong with the old shad rap, caught tons of fish on these little guy's.
Shallow Invader is another great lure, you can twitch it with ease, great action trolled or cast!
It kind of depends on how shallow or deep you are talking, lots of baits out there.
My favorite for over the tops of weeds is the Magic Maker!

I watched Jason Smith do magic over the weeds and through the weeds last year with Slammer Crankbaits. I have a great selection for this year, so LOOK OUT< muskies!![:praise:]

I love the cobb's shallow runner 6", the supershadrap, and the swim whizz attached to the bottom eye.

I have gotta say the double jointed, perch colored Bucher Shallow Raider. Just nick the tops of weeds, and it is deadly. Great large fish bait.

Slammers....Nothing else gives me the great side to side when twitched...That makes a huge difference.[;)]

Has to be shallow raiders and believers for me. I will be giving the new grandmas a try this summer.

I like the 10" jake, 10" believer on shallow setting and shallow invader most. Shallow invader is very impressive, especially when twitched.

Got a old 7" Redfin that I love to wake on the surface. Great lure on the rivers here in W.Va. Also throw Super Shad Raps, Depthraiders and Shallow Raiders {twitching}.

Just Me $.02 worth

When I think about twitching shallow crankbaits 4 things come to mind,

A jake
A shallow raider
and a Shallow invader...
Haven't ordered any slammers yet but Can't wait to try them out.

Well I donno its kind of hard to beat the wobble of a 10" jake. Btw I caught my first trolling a 10" jake [] Maybe thats why I like it too.
