Looking at at new boat this year just looking for some info on what 250 horse motor I should get. What make do you have, 2 stroke or 4, and your likes about your 250hp?

Thanks

I don't have a 250 HP, but have been in, and driven, boats with the Merc 250 Racing Optimax, the 250 Verado, the Yamaha 250 HPDI, 250 4 Stroke, and the 250 Etec. The Yamaha HPDI was a smooth, and quiet runner, As I recall, on a 621 Ranger, we got about 52-53 with it on Lake Erie with a slight chop. Hole shot was OK, but I don't know if was optimally propped. The 250 4-stroke Yamaha was very quiet. The 250 Etec was a strong runner. Good holeshot, and top end, on a Stratos MSX21.

I've had more exposure with the Mercs. The 250 Racing Optimax was an awesome performer. Great hole shot, and the thing pulled hard to WOT. Great top end. I've been in Tuffy's, Rangers, Lunds, and Crestliners with that motor. Awesome performance. The 250 Pro/XS should be even better. The 225 Pro/XS was an awesome motor on the 621 and 620 Rangers I drove with it. I wish my Tuffy 1890 was a few inches longer, hehehe. The 250 Verado is a pretty cool motor. Great performance for a 4-stroke, there is no other 4 stroke out there that compares. The supercharger is the difference. Low end trque for a great holeshot, and power all the wat through midrange and up. Extremely quiet. The DTS, digital shift and steer is like nothing you've ever driven. Smooth quite shifts, and throttle response, you have to relearn how to drive boats! About the only thing I can say bad is the mileage at WOT suffers. But if you're at cruising rpm, around 4000, it's much better.

Hope this helps a bit. As always, the dealer you choose to work with will have a big impact on your level of satifaction. If you have a great dealer, you're ahead of the game already.

Mike I have a 250 Merc XS on my 620. I love it! What helped me make the decision was the big block show down article in bass and walleye boat magazine. It out performed all other engines in all catagories. The only 250 that did not participate I believe was the Evinrude. They declined to participate. So I had no info on that motor really. We have had my 620 up into the mid 60's and the fuel economy is awesome for a motor of that size. Hope this helps.

Shep said it right! I had the opportunity to drive a few boats this season with 250's on the back and I would totally agree with what Shep had to say. Even though my username is Merckid, I will say with how well the Mercury 225Pro XS performed on the PWT last season I can only imagine how many guys will be running the new 250Pro XS this season. It should be a great performer!

I have owned the 250 Verado, and the 250 Opti XS Racing. I liked both, but am partial to the XS. Fast, reliable, and FAST.

I have the 250 XS and love it, Great power at any time, Fuel is very good for pushing the 621. Depends on the load but mid 60's is possible.

I have owned two Merc 250XS engines and they performed flawlessly. I have also owned a 250 Verado and that was one heck of an engine as well. When I figured out the best combo of prop, engine height and trim range the Verado pushed my Tuffy 2060 consistently to 65+ mph regardless of load when conditions allowed me to open it up.

Here's an image of the speedo, keep in mind this was going upstream. I love speed! Good luck in choosing your next engine there are some great options out there.
