| I’m toying with the idea of going to Vermillion for the MN muskie opener weekend and maybe a few weekdays. Having never been there that early, can anyone who has fished there early to mid June in the last few years let me know how you did and how was the pressure? I know I’m in the minority, but I love the early season. Sure big fish can be tough to get but it’s fun fishing muskies that haven’t seen lures for 6 months.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

| A number of years ago I fished Leech Lake on the Muskie opener, bad idea. Caught a Rock Bass on a bucktail and a small northern. Didn't see a Muskie. Depending on how warm the Spring is you might be able to connect with the Muskies, however on Vermillion planB might be Walleyes and Northerns. Me, I'd waite till June 20 or after. |

Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | My buddy and I went out at 5:30am last yr. and popped 2 nice fish before 6:00 am. As the day wore on it got hot(80* and dead calm)
We had 5-6 good follows in the afternoon but couldn't get them to bite.
As far as pressure goes we didn't see another musky boat until about 1:00 in the afternoon.Good luck,
Jerome

| Thanks for the replies so far. Jerome, was it a must to have weeds around on the fish you guys moved? |

Location: Lake Vermilion Tower, MN | Hi Jimmy,
I have had multiple fish days the last 6 years on opening day on Vermilion. My son and I raised another 7 or 8 fish during the day and caught a 48 incher on the second day.
The best thing about it was we spent over 6 hours in one of the best bays on the lake, and didn't see 5 other boats in there all morning.
Weather will be the main concern anytime you come this far north. It could be a nice summer day, or it could be in the 40's.
Most of the action will be in weeds, or on points adjacent to shallow spawning areas. It's not out of the question to see a few out on the rocks. Some of the reefs close to shore or in the mouths of some of the shallow back bays, will have fish on them. Small to medium sized hair either spinnerbaits or bucktails, cranks and small gliders, are some of my early season favorites.

Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | We always start out in or 1 cast away from the weeds.. Last yr. we fished the weeds until about noon and then hit some mid lake reefs and rocky points.
I was surprised that there weren't a bunch of other muskie boats out on opening week .
Also its good to know that the bigger Pike are more aggressive around this time of year, I've caught a few 38"-44" rod bending pike that were just a blast to play with.....
Don't be afraid to fish really SHALLOW,,, 1-2 ft. of water.
