I would like to get more into the slop this season with some trolling of spinnerbaits. Most of the slop is 1 to 3ft down and is milfoil. Lots of area to troll that is not fished much at all. Most of the spinnerbaits I have used are ok but just have not found the HOT one yet. How about some advice for a new slop trolling fisherman.

What are some of the spinnerbaits I should look into?

No rite or wrong answers here, just opinions..............

Hey Mike,

What spinnerbaits have you tried already? I ve had luck in the same areas, super burning or slow rolling Nut busters and I used to catch a bunch short line trolling big MG spinnerbaits. Grim Reapers are nice, but tend to hang a little deeper.

http://www.randomlurecompany.com/buffalo-hair_lures.php

About half way down the page theres a couple pics of a new spinnerbait Im picking up this year that I think is going to work nice in the slop.

you HAVE to check out some Musky Bling spinner baits. You can troll them fast and they will stay down in the water..you can troll them slower and they VERY weedless.
They put out a TON OF THUMP Mike.. they looks GREAT in the water..very durable..i would get couple of Blings. you wont be disappointed in casting or trolling these. I think they are available at some of the Musky Shows..or PM me.
i have every spinnerbait on the market and every basement guys spinnerbait too.. Blings are surely one of go to spinners and one i have a ton of confidence in (after seeing them land monster fish both casting and trolling). i ove 'em..but more importantly, the muskies eat them like crazy!!!!

Look into the new Trueglide spinnerbaits which were created for just this reason. I haven't had one in the water yet, but from the looks of it should be productive and weedless.

I have seen many spinnerbaits and bucktails but none compare to the durability and quality as a Willey's. Jimmy Willison makes them and he is good at it.....He's a standup guy that just makes a great product. And they catch fish. Check him out at his website at http://www.willeysbucktails.8m.com (and no i'm not sponsored by him...lol)

Musky-Skunk,
If you want to place an order e-mail me at [email protected] and tell me what you are looking for as far as colors. I have 40 stock colors and can do custom as well. I can send you pics of them as well. My website is in progress and should be up after Milwaukee.

Mike,
I have had some success both with Willey's and with the Snowcrest Festus spinnerbait. I too have thought about spending more time trolling spinnerbaits at Pewaukee. I've tried it some, but without any success so far. The fish I have caught trolling spinnerbaits were all caught in the Kawarthas (Ontario). I'm sure it would work in Pewaukee under the right conditions.

Has anyone tried trolling the Long Tale spinnerbaits or Pearson's Grinders? I have a couple of Grinders and was thinking of picking up a couple of Long Tales.

Mike, very few spinnerbaits are made to speed troll and get hammered by 40+ pound fish. Take a look at these, the lighter ones will stay higher with more line out but I use the 2.5 Oz ones and can troll them only a few feet back at 5+ MPH and they stay just under the surface.

I wonder how many musky teeth these things are gonna knock out. Biting down on 10 ounces of lead can't be good for the choppers. Haha.

If you're trolling in the top 1-3' take a light raddog and rerig it with 2 #7 or #8 colorado blades like an M&G. If you want to go a little deeper then go with the heavier head. Grinders with a colorado blade works well too. I like the M&G a lot, but you get around 10-15 hours before the arm falls off in my experience.

I plan on doing lots of trolling this year with the "Super Chinook" by Muskiemachinery. Have you guys seen that thing!!?? I threw it in the pool at Chicago and BOY was I impressed. It has two #10 Colorado's spinning on the shaft, like a cowgirl.. I wish tha I had a picture of it. I should troll really nice over the tops of the Milfoil.

The Super Chinook and my other spinnerbaits from MM are the best and I also use Grinders. I need to try the Long Tale trolling sometime, I am sure that will work great too. Musky Snax is making me some special spinnerbaits as well Joe your new ones look great too but I haven't seen them in person

Mike,

Haven’t trolled them but check out JLong’s line of spinnerbaits. I have thrown the Longshot, and am impressed with the ability to burn it without it rolling on it’s side like a lot of spinnerbaits do. It maintains it’s upright position. Longtail is offering there baits in the #10 Colorado as well.

I like my buddies GP Thumper when looking for a rubber bodies lure with a bit of extra thump. While made for casting, the heavier ones have been good for trolling too. We like to downsize the blade a step to say a 7 colorado, or a smaller willow to keep the speed and keep it from blowing out in the junk.

Thanks for the pictures above, I need to check out some of the ones R. Collins talked about. I have heard lots about ole 'skippy' in his boat!

I will have about 40 Boo Blings for sale at the Milwaukee show. They boast a huge profile in the water. They have 2 #10 blades, 2 8/0 Mustad single hooks, a 3oz. head, and built on a .062 frame. A full line of my spinnerbaits will be on-hand at the Professional Edge booth. Rollies will have the original Musky Bling for sale also.

I reckon,in a pinch, a guy could pinch a rubbercore on the shaft right in front of the head for more weight.
