What is your opinion on deep trolling and to what depths?

Jason,
As you are aware, I am not a troller because of the laws here in Northern Wisconsin. I do, however, fish Creatures alot, and frequently find fish in 25 to 30 feet, tight to the bottom. If they are up 3 feet or so, one can trigger them, if not, may as well go beat a weedline!

Had this discussion with the big Bob M. and he won't fish below 25 ft., funny thing this discussion came after he introduce Shawn McCarthy at a Muskie Show and we know Shawn's tactics are for deep water trolling 25 ft and deeper, Bob wouldn't quite come and say Shawn shouldn't fish for those deep fish, but he did hint. I thought this would be an interesting story for ya all (practicing the lingo for cave run). Al[:p]

One thing to keep in mind is that every fifteen feet is one atmosphere of pressure for these fish to go through. SO if you were to hook one thirty feet down, you will be bringing it up through two atmospheres of pressure. Don't horse the fish in, otherwise it's swim bladder may be hanging out of its mouth. Also, unless you are an expert in fizzing the fish with a hyperdermic needle, don't try that. You may end up puncturing vital organs with the needle. Just a thought, I have never fished that deep for them. Not saying that
you shouldn't, just be careful[:)]

Point well taken Chad!
Be careful with deep water fish expecially in the summer.

I read somewhere that muskies have been caught in dnr nets as deep as 60 feet in hard bottom gin clear lake trout type lakes. I would assume that open water fish follow the bait schools, deep or shallow, to some extent. I have caught northerns on the bottom in the deepest walleye hole on Waconia, 40 ft. I don't know if the muskies follow.

The deepest I've ever taken a fish was 67ft in Nov right on the bottom on live bait (51 ins) I have fished in over 100ft of water also on the bottom but no takers YET. Mr Cain is correct on bringing fish out of deep water, the stress on the fish is high especially in warmer water, in the cold water periods it's less but I still choose to release the fish in shallow water to make it easier for them to equalize the preasure change. I'd have to say the best depth (for deep water) that I've had is between 32 & 35 feet

I catch a lot of fish down 30 to 35 feet but some do get the benz so taking your time brigning them up is a good advise as well as I would not recommend fishing with your lure deeper then 35ft ether. [:sun:]

Deepest fish this year was taken an a sinking shark crankbait at 55' on the bottom November 27th -CASTING PRESENTATION- 49.75 " 35#- Client Adam Johnson. Picture on Musky Hunter photo site. I only fish this deep in cold water (under 40 degrees )Care must be used in all phases of the process in cold water. We cast- peel extra line off as lure is sinking then drift away with boat before retreiving in case your wondering how its done

This past Nov. we caught a few down at 42'. We took our time and they came up on there own. Release was not a problem.

I have taken muskies 30ft down...even Salmon 200ft down. If you take your time they release just fine. Muskie will give you a fight and will adjust to the pressure as they come up in my opinion.

I have jerked perch in 40ft and reeled them to the hole in less then 10 seconds...then you see the air blader out of the mouth.
