I don't need the works. Can I get a good/ solid marine band radio for 100 bucks? I am looking for something that will fill tournament requirements. Brand names and specific models very much appreciated.

HJ,

Take a look in Cabelas, Gander or just about any good marina. Most of them are around a $100 bucks. I know a lot of guys on the PWT ran the Lowrance marine band. I think Cabelas had them for a $100. I have had the same Uniden for multiple years now, but both are good names. I think Shakespeare is another good one, they also make a majority of the antenneas. You probably know this but I would highly suggest you get one that is going to be permenantly mounted in your boat, I know there are tournament trails that do not allow hand helds. Hand helds do not get the range as one that has a seperate antennea.

Thanks Merc,
Actually I didn't consider the permanent mount vs. handheld. Thanks very much for saving me a mistake as I probably would have bought a handheld. I will look at the brands you mentioned in a permanent mount. Thanks again.

Not a problem HJ, I would highly suggest any of those models and whatever you do, definitely spend the extra money to go with the radio and the antennea. I remember this past season on the PWT how some of the regional guys didn't have permenant mounted Marine bands and they were scrambling to find one. But let me know if I can help with any other questions.

Yup, the Lowrance radio will do just fine. Do not skimp on the antenna. A cheap antenna will make a great radio bad. Shakespeare, Galaxy 5225 for an 8', if you have room. Otherwise get the Little Giant. Both of these will cost $100 or more, but you will be glad you got the best antenna.

ICOM is pretty much sets the standard for performance on the big water. You can get a decent one, a decent Shakespeare 8' 6dB whip antenna and a ratchet mount for $200-225. DSC is also standard on all ICOMS.

I like my Icom setup. Here's a link to some past info if it helps!
