I am getting a new reel for throwing my double 10 'tails. I am leaning towards the new ihsn. Pro Rocket guys, give me your sales pitch. Does anybody know all of the 7000 models that have been upgraded for this year? I would like to jerk some mag dawgs with this reel also. I need an instant anti-reverse.

Troy, check out the Penn 975 thread in tackle/equipment...I've thrown just about every Abu you can think of and the Penn reels them in easier/less effort...
If you have to have an abu, I'd go with the 7000ics Pro Rocket at 4.1 to 1. easier than 5.3 to 1.

Lambeau broke in a new 7000 this weekend with anti reverse. I can't remember the exact model. Maybe he'll chime in here ......

yep, the ihsn is not the reel you want for big tails.

I will be picking one up though for pounders, dawgs, etc

this weekend i just tried out my new 7000 i CS Pro Rocket, and it was good.
great power with the big spool and 4.1:1 gear ratio, and very smooth on the cast.
the instant-anti-reverse worked nicely, with very limited backplay in the handle.
i found that i liked the lever spool release: not as easy as a thumbar, but better than a push button.
note: this is NOT lever drag, just lever freespool
the new soft-knob power handle is a great addition as well.
i've only used it the one day so far, but it exceeded my expectations and i trust this reel since i had great success with my standard (no IAR) 7000 CS Pro Rocket last year.
if you're paying retail it runs $150 and looks to be a good value.

brad reports the Penn 975 to feel stronger when throwing hard-pulling baits. my assumption would be that the gearing is superior in the Penn since they have a long history of quality reels for saltwater use. the Penn will run you about $250, so like anything you get what you pay for.

The $100 price difference is something to consider...

I'm pretty well sold on the 975, though, for several reasons:

1. The 4 abus I have (7000HSN, 6500C4, 6500C3, RCN60 Record) all leave something to be desired. They all work just fine, but they don't feel as solid as some of my other reels.

2. The Penn name; They build reels for saltwater fishing, and nothing in muskie fishing comes close to what saltwater tackle has to stand up to.

3. Comfort. They're all comfortable after an hour or two, but what about 10? What about 5 days in a row?

Palming the 7000HSN is not comfortable. (don't know about the pro rocket) That's not a big deal, because I hold the front grip on the rod most of the time anyway. But when I hold the front grip with the 7000, the frame of the reel will bump the bony part of my wrist in front of where my watchband sits. I'm no wuss, but after a couple hours, that starts to hurt! Not the fault of the reel, but it's a problem I don't have with any reel but that one. When I do palm the reel, there is a world of difference between how a smooth sided reel feels (like the Millionaire for example), and how all the Abus feel. When palming, I want a reel that fits my hand nicely, and doesn't cause any discomfort from screws, knobs, etc. poking into my hand.

I realize it's mostly personal preference, related to the way I fish, and not related to quality and or/dependability issues, but comfort is important. If you're going to fish for 5 hours and go home you can fish with anything. But of you're going to fish for 12, and fish again tomorrow, and the next day, silly little things like that can make a HUGE difference. Even the metal push button on some of the abus starts to hurt after pushing it down a thousand times or so...

another one to check out would be the Shimano Tekota, 4.2 to 1...same lever type spool release as the new 7000's...160 bucks or so...nice power handle...etc etc...
But if you are going to get a workhorse for big tails etc, spend the coin and get the Penn and be done with it!

the Penn 975 also weighs 6oz less than the Abu 7000iCS (15oz vs 21oz), so that will lessen fatique over long days. but that makes me ask, WHY does it weigh less, and what (if anything) is gained by the Abu?

why ask why?
i've used mine 2 + seasons of HARD use...it had one issue, I would venture to guess any Abu with that many hours on it would have way more than 1 issue...
they are a touch smaller than the Abu's size wise and maybe just use some lighter components? not sure I care...i just know it works.

why ask why?

a) it's January
b) it's interesting
c) understanding things helps in decision-making

i'd like to know the inches of line pickup/crank between the two reels.
that's a quantifiable performance characteristic that actually matters.

Line retrieved per handle turn is a wash between a 975 and a 7000c3. I don't have any experience with the new 7000's, but I'm sure they are similar. I like the way the Penn's are built, just like a tank.

just do the dew!

I think they are very similiar in line per crank....I could go do a test in my garage tonight but I already know that the Penn seems easier to get the bait in than the Pro Rocket ..so I'll stick to what I know...buy the Penn and let other guys figure out that it's harder to reel in tails with their Abu's....

bn, HAve you ever cassted a Takota? The reason I ask is that these are designed as trolling reels and I never heard of anyone ever casting them. Does it cast good?

I have not but from the literature on them they sound like good casting reels too...I think they would be from what I've read...hope to see one at the shows....
