Subject: Winter musky location ?

Now that PA has no closed season for musky fishing it opens up a new type of fishing to us that live in PA ,Winter musky fishing. The trouble is is that I have no idea on how to fish for muskies when the water temps are in the high 30's ? I'm not talking river or creek fishing I'm talking about fishing small lakes . We have had a very mild "winter " so far and we have no ice at all so I'm talking about open water fishing Is there any patterns for winter fishing that anyone is willing to share ? Or even where the muskies would be located this time of year shallow or deep ? thanks

ferd in the detroit river winter months our muskies are in the sturgeon hole. its the deepest section of calm water with major forage base.. they seem to winter there and when spring breaks move to the spawning grounds they use.

Maybe try Fuzzy Duzzits over the deep.

I was at Leesville Lake in ohio Friday. I saw one muskie run out of a cove i was entering, but saw a lot of fish on the graph over a deep break near the main lake channel. I don't think I trolled deep enough to get the bait down to them. i think you have to get the bait to where the fish don't have to run for it in the colder water. When I get one using this approach I'll let ya know. m

i nailed a mid 30's on woodcock on a sledge in NOvember. there was still green weed where i caught it.
one of the coldest days we've had thus far.

however,i've been focusing on the lower 3 rivers area with no luck...some days i thought for sure i'd get one, but nothing yet.

shoot me an email, we can bs there. i was going to go out yesterday and today, but the big H for housework finally caught up with me, so i didnt go.

Ferd,

Water holds the most oxygen at 39 degrees...when turnover occurs the oxygen levels are high all throughout the water column...this also means that the muskies are doing the same. I am catching muskies in 6 ft. of water and 30 ft. of water...all the way to the bottom...and some even in deeper sections.
