Was up in Canada fishing muskies last week and ran across several muskies with red spots on them. Many of the small northerns we caught had them as well. What is this and what affect does it have on the fish. Is there anywhere on can get more info on this?

It is an infection that in many cases is not life threatening to Muskies and Pike, but under the right conditions, can kill the fish. Prolonged very warm water and lower oxygen content, as I understand the disease, causes red Spot disease to be dangerous. Any experts out there want to weigh in on the issue? I am not certain if there are more than one strain of the infectious agent, or if there is only one.

The Wabigoon, Ontario Muskies and Pike frequently have red spot, but heal up quickly, and in the healing process develop new skin, and over time, scale back over, but a scar is present for a long period of time.

What lake & how big are the spot's?-raw open wound? perfect circle? under skin? etc, etc? Most likely a parasite. No- not website anonymous poster's, a real parasite. Anyone have an explanation for our good friend? MNR or one of the biologist's visiting this site may be able to help if you can give further details-

I saw this on several different lakes in the area we fished. Many of the bigger muskies (35 inches and longer) had it while few of the smaller ones did. Quite a few of the pike had it as well. The spots were not in any particular shape, but were often raw and covered with puss. It didn't look good, although the fish were very fat and appeared healthy otherwise. The spots were in all different places as well, from the cheek to the tail. If close to a fin, often the fin was rotted off. Anybody know more about this?

Shorty: Sounds like Lymphosarcoma, a form of fish cancer, but could be something else. If "Lympo", not good. Let's hope it is something else.

I don't know for sure if it is, but if it's red spot disease it can really hurt the fish population on the lake. I don't know to much about it but I know that on pymatuming lake in pa and oh, red spot disease killed a lot of muskies, and has a bigger affect on the big females. I would report it to someone, i.e. DNR or whoever is in charge in the area.
