| I just got a letter from Merc indicating my 2001 merc 4 stroke 60hp falls into a range of engines that were possibly built with rocker arms that were not up to specs. According to the letter, Merc wants to replace the WHOLE engine through my dealer in order to reduce the inconvienience. Anybody familiar with this or have the same thing going on? Jason and Steve? Any ideas? |

| Hey Dave,
Dave Fornara from Esox Angler, the guy I was staying with up in Hayward, had the same thing happen to him, and he just went and got a brand new one. If I were you, I would do the same. Why risk potential problems down the road, get a new one!!!

| Yes, I have heard of the recall. They will replace the engine, no questions, from what I have seen. Mercury stands behind their products very well. Take the letter as gospel, it is! |

| Dave:
Did you have symptoms with the motor? I bought a 75 2-stroke Merc last year and I have had a ton of problems with it. Was the recall only for 4-strokes?
Thanks,
Greg |

| I have not had any problems with it but Merc said there is a possibility of problems so they offered to give me a whole new engine! I plan on taking them up on that. Southwest marine is already aware of it so the ball is rolling. Problems occur in all things and i appreciate Mercs response in this one. |

| Yup, happened to me, just as you described. What’s nice is that they’re replacing them with the 2002 model that has EFI. So It isn’t that bad. I had the new motor put on over the winter, but have no hours on it yet. I can’t wait.
I have a hunch they ALL(2001 new model year) were recalled and they’re just slowly replacing them with EFI. I got my letter in August. |

| You guys are going to love the new EFI's. You talk about fuel efficient!! I ran mine the other weekend on Kinkaid pretty hard, and in two days I burned 4.9 gallons of gas. That is amazing. They are also super easy to start on cold mornings, turn the key, and they fire immediately. You will be glad there was a re-call!!!! Also, don't freak out like I did during the break-in period. I ran mine for three hours and burned thirteen gallons of gas! I couldn't believe it. Once they are broken in though, they are AWESOME!!

| Yep: I am getting a new engine! It should take 7-10 days to get the new one on but what the heck. They guys at Southwest Marine (Harry/Danny) were great about it. And Merc did a stand up thing. Much more than i expected! |

| Isn't the 2001 a Yomama engine? I believe the 2002 EFI model is all Merc, with the ECM555 ignition. You can use the SmartCraft gauges on this engine!

| Guys:
Was the recall only for 4-strokes?
Thanks in advance. |

|
| from what i hear, it is only a group of 4 strokes with a certain production number range. |

| Chad,
Thanks for the input, but you’ve got me “freaking out” right now. Could you elaborate on burning 13 gallons of fuel in 3 hours? Where there abnormal circumstances or can I expect the same when I break mine in? Did your power/performance increase much with the EFI? Thanks much.

| When I broke mine in, it is kind of a pain in the butt because you constantly have to keep changing your RPM's. Also, in the second hour, one out of every ten minutes you have to run it wide open, so bring a watch. Like I said, I ran it for the first three hours and burned 13 gallons of gas. I about had a heart attack. I was ready to call Mercury and complain. Then I ran into a buddy on the water, and he has a 90 hp four stroke, and he said the same thing happened to him when he was breaking his in. I guess during the break in period, they burn a ton of gas. After that though, they seem to stabilize, and burn very little gas. I wish someone would have told me about it before hand. The EFI's definitely seem a little faster. I have a Ranger 680 tiller, and on GPS I was running 37 mph after I broke it in. That is pretty good for a 60hp, on a pretty heavy boat. You will love your motor, I promise you!!
