Anyone been on Webster recently? I'm looking for any advice in bait selection. I'm fairly new at musky hunting and any insight will be greatly appreciated. I hope to have three guys in boat plus a sucker out. Thanks. Mikel

Big Plastics like Mag Dawgs, Big Suzie Suckers, Pounders, or Jig....

Don't move around alot, find the bait fish, stay put.

Boated 3 in 2.5 hours Saturday on small crankbaits. Boated 4 more on small crankbaits including a 45" Christmas morning (4.5 hours). I never looked for bait fish...fish were in a number of spots on the lake. Mostly fished in the 10-20 ft. of water. Make long pauses when retrieving your lure back.

Landed two 32 inchers today. Both on swimwiz baits useing the "Vince Weirick" method of---- Make long pauses when retrieving your lure back. Would have been better off with lighter tackle. Then the bad news. I hit something hard and it took out a gear in the lower end of my motor. .

Thats rocking them Vince!!!

I wish I had the time to get down your way. Still bowhunting around here since the ice became too unsafe to beat up on the walleyes this weekend. Keep the reports comming. I like to hear about people catching muskies, even though I shut it down for the 2006 muskie season.

With that kind of action you don't need to advertize. Just post reports and say your still fishing. People will check it out.

in case anyone has not figured it out yet...
any year, that there is no ice on webster lake, during the month of december, it's possibly the eastest body of water to catch fish on..anywhere. heck, even the wife and i have muliple fish days on there in december. for the past 9 years, if you can lauch in december, you can catch fish. it's just that easy. any bait (besides topwaters), any size, any color...if your wife, girlfriend, grandpa or children can handle the colder weather, this might be the best month of the year to to put anyone on thier first musky

nothing like drawing more attention to a already over fished and over pressured body of water! i cant wait til next december, oh boy!!! the amount of scarred and obvious mishandled fish out of there is getting out of hand, small bait tactics with lighter line for big fish, ok yup that sounds really smart too. one thought, what happens when shamoo hits???? a group of digdongs went out there this fall and started this small bait thing and now everyone and their brother are acting like they created it! hats off to those clowns! fish are biting right now no need to play king of the hill! funny how that works for "reports"
anyone up for exploiting another fishery????

Well, common, it sounds like you shouldn't fish there anymore, and tell all your Il neighborhood's muskie anglers to leave it alone, too. I've been there a couple times and never saw a clown fishing out there, but I suppose that's possible; maybe a kids b-day party or something. You, sir, need to take a look at this:

http://www.advancedetiquette.com/schedule.htm

What the heck happens to etiquette and courtesy this time of the year?

Exploit? That water? Yeah, it was a secret, just last week. Small baits are bad, are they? I use small cranks for Muskies quite a bit. One of my favorite patterns on Sabaskong and Sioux Narrows, a very popular technique on Pewaukee too, and it's obviously just RUINED those fisheries. I can and do whip muskies as fast on my crank bait stick as on my Big Fig Rig, and handling is handling; nothing to do with the lure.

Give me a break.

Matt, really now, this is a FISHING REPORTS forum. This thread is a report responding to a specific question, and a good one.

Everyone wants to own the lake personally.

The concern I have with smaller baits is fluorocarbon leaders and the amount of muskies getting cut off, this will hurt the fishery. I have seen this more then one time on webster.

Mike,

I use flourocarbon leaders...60lb. I have caught over 25 muskies on the same leader...nothing wrong with it at all. Stever Herbeck showed me how to tie and use them up on Eagle Lake...obviously with BIGGER fish than what we have around here with no problems.

I can also remember bringing a fish to the boat in January of this year that had missed the bait completely and had a hold of the leader only...bait was on the outside of the mouth with no hook in it. If my partner had been ready...we could have netted that fish!

As for multiple fish being caught...yes it is happening...talked to one boat at lunch. They had 3 but the largest was 35". There are only a couple of boats putting large fish in the boat.

7000 fish in a 1000 acre lake...20-boats pressure? Sorry, I don't see it. There are more than enough fish to go around in Webster. Webster has been pounded hard for over 5 years and it still produces fish! Secret...there is no way. Every muskie magazine/book has Webster Lake in it somewhere. I have a book here at home that has a map of North America and that lakes that has muskies in it...Webster Lake is in it from 1995! I also know that Jim Saric's new muskie fishing series includes Webster...is anyone hackling him about it? I don't think so.

The only pattern I have mentioned on here is small baits...nothing else. Let's see here...I remember our club's last tournament where 6 fish were caught on 3/4 ounce rattle traps using bass gear and there was never one person giving them any crap for it. Those baits are much smaller than what I am using.

I am truly sorry if anyone has gotten offended by this! If you think about certain lures/techniques that have come about in the past...one person tells another and another and another. That is why Muskie First is the website they are...sharing of information. New lures hit the market. Some fail and some shine. Why? because people talk about them and what they like/dislike and how they have produced for them. Same goes with tactics/techniques.

I went to the muskyhunter website and used the calculator it said just over 30lbs like 30.8 lbs or something like that. It sucks that people have to hate on this website. It isnt a website for that it is a website to help and give it when nessacery. its too bad every boat out there wasnt catching fish. like the guy up above that didnt even log in its a good thing when he was out there he got a hit or two or else we would of been skunked another time this year. i hate how the people that nag the post dont even sign in they have to hide behind some guest names like common sense. good luck fishing out there you either are pissed off cause you dont catch enough fish or you cant take people catching bigger fish than you have caught. its on you. Vince is a great fisherman and is on fish all the time any time of the year well thats all I have to say!!

Good to hear you are catching fish in December Vince when most people have put their stuff up for the year. somebody is obviously jealous that they don't have the chance to go out and catch three or four a day. nice fish Vince and Brandon hope you keep the ball rollin

also who hasn't heard of Webster that isn't a musky angler, all the bodies of water up here are hammered because that is all we got here in northern Indiana.

There's a lot of guys who seem to be angry about the "ding dongs" from Illinois who fished Webster using "smaller baits" and caught a bunch of fish a few weeks ago. Supposedly this started some dangerous "small bait" trend that is threatening Websters fragile fishing.

I happen to know those dingdongs personally and was out there at the same time so I got to see and hear it for myself. Did they catch a lot of fish--yes, but not everything came on downsize baits. Also, at least half the time they were there with their younger kids (10-13) and were trying to put them on fish, not necessarily a "super trophy," so they had them throwing some smaller lures. BTW, among the "small fish" caught over those 2 weekends were a 48, 46, 45 and several in the 40-43 range. (Raise your hand if YOU have a 48 in the boat out there this fall.) They also missed a few 45+ that followed or hit.

Face it folks, it's called smart fishing. Find the bait, then show the fish a presentation they aren't familiar with. When you find the fish, stay with them. (Still confused? Read the recent MH article by Steve Heiting--you don't leave fish to find them.) They didn't "harm" the fish, there were no "bite offs" by big fish on light line or any garbage like that. If you don't like their approach, then don't do it. But don't blame people for what they did, or others for using the same method that happens to be working. BTW, it's not THAT an unusual approach.
