I'm not even sure if I spelled it right....BUT, I think I go through this post pardom "Muskie Season" depression each and every year. I can only sharpen so many hooks, oil so many reels, read so many magazines, watch so many movies, and go to only so many shows. Can someone PLEASE give me an idea or two, to get through the winter? I am seriously considering pulling my boat out of storage, and trying to find one of those Indiana Lakes or illinois lakes that have the tooth critters.

Any ideas...and ALL ideas will be considered at this point!!

In advance...thanks for the responses!

I hear you Donnie. The last time that I was out was 22 days ago....BUT it already seems like it has been about a year since I was on the water. Indy is not an option for me, if I didn't take the winter off I would be living on the street.

I try to pace myself getting everything organized/fixed/etc. for next season so I can at least sit down for an hour or so every weekend and do something fishing related. Besides fixing baits, re-spooling reels, etc. this winter I'm going to inventory all my stuff, photograph it all, and try to figure out what I paid for some of it. While I'm going that I'm putting together a "for sale" box so I don't have so much stuff that doesn't get used.

Making lures helps me somewhat. And if they don't work they help warm the house in the wood burner.

But there is no substitute for actually being on the water.

My best advice to anyone who needs to be "muskie involved" is to take all there equipment and take an inventory. Pictures and records would be smart so if a fire, theft or some other bad thing happened you would have a great record of all your stuff.

I hang up all my lures and sort them so I know what I have and what I need for the next comming season.

This takes plenty of time and it's fun to organize everything. Trust me you will be into doing this and it will take days to get it all done.

1) Pull up web cam's from LOTW's and watch closely for the snow and ice to melt.

2) Go to Google maps or terra server and view your favorite lakes from the air (satellite view) and look at all those great fish holding spots. Also see if there might be some underwater structures not on the maps. Or just look and dream of July.

3) Visit forums, check the post's for any recent post's.... repeat every 10 min.

4) Ice fish

Donnie, try a session of uncontrollable weeping. You could even cry out in anguish a couple of times. Seemed to work for my wife after she had our daughter. Within a couple of weeks she was as good as new.

I haven't done it yet, but I'm still basking in the glow of what I thought was a pretty good first season. Not a great success by most people's standards, yet thoughts of it make me feel warm and fuzzy. I don't at this point seem to be suffering from any depression, however, boredom is a reality.

Kevin

I have another Plan.

Take charge! Assuming you live up north, the only way to go is ice fishing. Make a plan to figure out how to load your freezer with walleye fillets over the winter, then go, man, go! You'll find that consistently catching decenet 'eyes is just as hard as doing muskies. You'll spend a ton of time learning new stuff and more than a few bucks getting those tasty scalies on the ice.

Not me, I fished last weekend and if my plans go right, I will catch my last fish of the year on the 31st and my first fish of the year on the 1st. Looks like the weather may hold out for it.

I fished 5 hours today --Lost 1 , my buddy raised 4 , 2 40 inch type fish , not bad for a small stream in northern KY. There ! --Did that make you feel better , temps in the high 50's low 60's this weekend for cave run area. All I want for Christmas is a big musky, a big musky . Living down here does'nt suck all the time. MD

Donnie- I think you have spelled it right, i.e., I believe you have coined a new term for a previously unknown medical condition afflicting many muskie anglers (Post Pardom Depression). Post Partem Depression refer's to having babies and going into depression ( Yeah, all those poopy diapers could do that to you) . But it's hardly applicable to most muskie anglers ( I have probably errored on the side of being politically incorrect) But, I think a new medical term is in order for this affliction amongst muskie anglers. YES, I have this affliction also! When Sponge & I release the magic "post pardom" elixer (read -> cure) we will both be multi-billionaires like Bill G. Right now it's a big debate over naming it, i.e., viagra is already taken!

Perhaps a psuedo winter cure is to head for Tennessee, i.e., like Doug J.

Have fun!

Al

No such thing for this old man, I don't have the time to miss it much. Ice fishing, deer hunting, boat and sport shows, and suddenly I'm on the Cave in March at the MuskieFIRST Outing. This year it's somewhere else.

Taking a trip to Illinois or Indiana is not a bad Idea. I live in Illinois and fish here all year long. When its too hot in the summer I try to make a trip up north to Minnesota and this was my first year visiting Canada. I also like to fish a couple rivers in Wisconsin.

So... what is the difference between taking a trip to Minnesota if you live in Illinois than taking a trip from Minnesota to Illinois? It sure beats not fishing at all... not to mention you have a legit shot at catching multiple nice fish down here in the winter months.

So, when your done sharpening your hooks, make the drive to some open water. If there are muskies swimming in it, its worth a shot.

Donnie,

I hear ya. I have not paced myself very well either as I read my winter issues out in a day, and have re-read many articles, watched my videos - I need some neew material.
My advice would be to take up skiing so you can head West for scenery that rivals Canada. I iwsh I could practice that sermon as I am not heading out to Colorado, Lake Tahoe, or Utah this year. This will be the first time that I haven't made it out West at least once in 15 years. so, I'm double bummed.
But, should you head out there for some downhill magic, you'll see scenery - the only scenery that can trump Canada. To me Lake Tahoe is the most beautiful place in the world. The only problem with Lake Tahoe is it quickly reminds me of the crystal clear Trout waters of Canada! Back to "Post Pardom Muskie Depression"!

Enjoy!

Sponge,

Flip that Horney Toad over, rub 'er belly, and she's fast asleep. Set her down on the main back spine, and she'll slowly swing nose-to toward the most active World Record Muskie anywhere Muskies are. That's the truth.

Happy Holidays to you, and your family. You need to get West next year, the Hideout is open, plenty of room for the whole family, except for the In Laws from Pawtucket.

Just finally got the boat store for the hopefully short winter. Winter Projects help pass the time but do not replace time on the water

1-Finish basement, hopefully by Jan, Then my fishing room will be done
2-Bait inventory, photos, then make a list of what bait need backups, and evaluate were the tool box is little week
3- Sport Shows, Chi-town is 3 weeks away,
4-Muskie Inc Meeting and events
5-Mexico for a Week and little salt water fishing, love the sound of screaming reels
6-Bait mods, time to tinker, touch up chipped baits, custom painting old baits
7-Clean and maintenance on all rods and reels
8-Musky research on new lakes for 2007

I'll be perfecting a new crank bait...I hope it will waggle like crazy, be roughly 10 inches long, somewhat cylindrical in shape (like bait), run 6-8 feet, cast and retrieve easy, etc.

There are many islands with white sand beaches down in the carribean where there coincidentally happens to be a rather abundant supply of great looking women and quality rum. Now there's a surfire fix for your muskie depression. And IF you have persistent symptoms......B A R R A C U D A!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Personally, with the first option available, I've never had to go the barracuda route. Snorkeling and scuba are also neat ways to get into fish, literally.

Wow the ski trips and tropical paridises sound nice... ...but I got to save my vacation time and money for chasing muskies. I have late muzzleloader and rifle seasons for deer and of course (as mentioned) lots of ice fishing. I also make lures but have made so many this winter already I won't be able to take half of them out next year. Oh well maybe I'll have to get a bigger boat.

Being from Illinois , I agree with Reelwise , head to open water and give it a shot !! Taking out a buddy and my wife this weekend , hopefully for an early Christmas present !!!! Other than that , I go to a buddies house who drags the tv and dvd player out by the fire and we watch Muskie pron !!! I should take a picture of that , a bunch of idiots dressed for a blizzard sitting around a fire and movie like they're at the drive in , but with cold beers and something worth watching !!!

5 to 8" tonight in Oneida, and as much as 10" in Vilas. Add lake effect in Vilas tomorrow, and you might have open snowmobile trails.

This is the time of the year to take care of all the honey-dews, so that during the season your bill is paid in advance. Just remember to keep a running tally!
