Location: Girdwood, Alaska | Anybody know how to get that cog wheel off of an Abu Garcia reel? That is the white gear attached to the palming side plate of your reel. I need to replace it but have no idea how to get it off. Thanks in advance!! |

Location: Norway | If it has a locking ring remove that first. I made a tool for removing the idlergear/cogwheel. Take a fork (ask your wife first :)) cut away the middle teeth on it, bend the remaining 2 90 degrees, this way you get a "lifter" to pull the gear straight out.
See illustration.

Location: Girdwood, Alaska | thanks for the info guys... so if it doesn\'t have a locking clip it will just pull right off? Thank you for the illustration Piko, I think a green repair tool would also work in a similar way |

| There are three kinds of cog gears that were used frequently on Abu reels. If it has a "C" clip on it then the above posts are correct. If it is a grey cog then there will be two little "wings" that snap onto the metal post, push a small screw driver between the wing and the post and it will deform the wings enough to let you take the cog off. The most current typw is a white cog without a "C" clip. This typw has a plastic ring molded in on the top of the cog. You can simply grab it with a pliers and pull it straight off or take a razor blade and cut the ring off and then the cog will come right off. |
