| Fast forward to next season...
What are you going to do differently?
1. I'm going to try to break away from the thinking that I always have to always fish where the fish "should be" and throw what I "should throw". Sometimes they're not where you expect them to be and hitting stuff you wouldn't expect them to.
2. I'm going to focus less on firing off as many casts as possible at an area and more on throwing precise casts at specific spots in that area.
3. I HAVE to scale down on lures. Stop bringing stuff I don't need, stop buying stuff I already have a bunch of, and focus on the lures that I know work. On the worst days I may use 10 lures. Why do I have 100+ in the boat?
4. I have to get my head around what makes a good spot... Knowing the good spots on one lake doesn't do much for you when you move to new water. Knowing why those spots are good and what is around them/on them that makes fish like them does.
5. I gotta learn how to back in a trailer I need a boat, and I'm not going to be the guy tying up the launch while 5 other guys are sitting there cussing at me under their breath.
What about you? |

EA I guess that I am a little more laid back than some, I wouldn't be cussing....I would be the guy laughing at you. |

| yah Bytor I was laughing at him when I asked if he could just "dump me in quick" when we hit monona...ooops thought he knew how to do that...
as for the thread...what will I do differently..not much...had a pretty unbelievable year...hopefully the horseshoe is firmly planted in 07. |

Location: The desert | EA...you got to do what I do..."can you dump me in quick?" "You bet, not a problem!" Me thinking to my self: "Oh crap, I suck at backing up trailers....I hope I can get it in there!"
Usually it works....if you screw up once or twice just say you arent used to a boat like that or cant see well! Works like a charm.

The first two must know things about backing up a trailer is first off, USE YOUR MIRRORS! You will succeed so much better if you can learn to back a trailer up with your mirrors than having to look behind you everytime. Because not every truck you get in will allow you to see out the back.
Number two, when backing up, don't place your hand at 12 o'clock on the steering wheel! If you put your hand at 6 o'clock and turn whatever direction you want the boat to go, trust me it works! If you can master those two things you can back anything up!
1. As for me on what I want to do different, I would like to play or spend more time on fishing more mid lake structure. Instead of hitting the same spots every time that every other guy fishes, learn to fish where people are intimated to fish, so thinking outside the box.
2. The one that will never leave my list will be boat control, always looking to improve my boat control. To me boat control is more important than what lure your throwing, it's more about where your placing the lure in my opinion.
3. And spend as much time on the water as I did this summer and maybe more, with people I care about. |

2. Learn 2 more new lakes during the summer, that I plan to fish in the fall. Once it's fall, there's not enough time in the day to waste wondering where you should go.
3. Down size on the number of lures I have - although I have my wish list made for the Chicago show - maybe recycle lures that I don't use with lures I'll probably end up not using too.
4. Look for more secondary spots |

| Hey Guys,
I'm thinking about branching out alittle bit instead of fishing Mantrap all the time maybe fish Plantagenette and Little Wolf and Leech and some lakes in the
DL area a little bit more. |

| I'm going to stop thinking about muskies all day everyday, and laying awake in bed thinking about the days to come. Maybe stop getting on the water before daylight and getting off well after dark
Awww who am I keeding, maybe I'll try that the year after next |

| Let me get this straight. You guys muskie fish all the time, spend time on message boards and you can't back in a boat trailer?? That's like being a hardcore pheasant hunter that doesn't know how to get the safety off their gun! Do your partners a favor spend some time at ramp and learn the basics. I am going to waste less time fishing muskie during the day and focus on the night bite.

Magruter, my camera made it in the boat, just a little wet though! LOL! Good thing it was dad's work camera and we didn't have to pay for it. |

| Unless I missed something, nowhere in either of Merckid's posts did I see anything about making sure that the net is secured in the boat before you head to the boat landing.

Location: Hayward, WI | Next year I want to catch more fish! This year I caught 8, next year my goal is 20.... A crazy goal? Probably, but I feel like I learned so much this year ('experienced" fisherman but first year musky guy), that I will have a much better start next year. Nearly all of my fish were caught in the later part of the year, and I think I can add a lot to my early season game.
Anyway...
Try more spots on the lake I spend the majority of my time on. This year I did get stuck in a bit of a rut by fishing the same couple areas heavily. They are "good" spots, but also community spots. Next year I will be striking out on my own a lot more.
Try to learn at least one new lake fairly well.
Try out a few different baits to get confidence in them.
Try to fish ALL DAY a number of times.
Try to find at least some fish when I had such a terrible slump (0 fish even seen) this summer from late june to mid August.
Practice figure 8's and hopefully score on at least one.
Put some larger fish in the boat. Even a handful of 40+ would do. Most this year were mid to upper 30's.
Sharpen boat control. I think I learned this year that "good" maybe isn't quite good enough.
Pay a lot of attention and try to figure out the WHY of why fish did or didn't bite.
I have so many things you guys would get bored reading them, so I'll stop here.
To you guys worried about trailer backing...nothing to it with practice. You'll be a little rusty and slow at first, before you really have figured out which direction, how much, and when to turn. With a little practice (in an empty parking lot), by the end of the year you will be doing better than 75% of the other guys out there.
Why? Because you have made it important to yourselves to get good at it.

Location: Brookfield, WI | I want to become MuskyHelpful next year. I'll admit to being quite timid in other people's boats and hope it didn't come off as laziness. I was quite worried about backing or pulling out trailers, handling trolling motors, etc. Didn't want to break anything, get in the way, or look more stupid than I already did. This year I'll get in the way and look more stupid early on, but then maybe I can quickly become somewhat of an asset to those kind enough to take me fishing. Hopefully, I will continue to not break anything.
