How do you make a wire thru bait?

Subject: How do you make a wire thru bait?

I'm tinkering around with the idea of making myself a few 14 to 16 inch deep running trolling cranks. I could easily use screw eyes and a metal screw in lip but don't want to. How do you make a wire thru bait? Do I cut out a blank and saw it in half and then carve out the slot for the wire?

Also, I have some very large plastic lips and would need to support them from the underside with some wire...Is the wire under the lip also the wire that runs thru the whole lure?

Thanks.

SM,
Your best bet is to saw your raw stock in half, then proceed to cut and shape your lure. Check out the Anatony section of the Loke lure site. This will answer your "wire through" questions. Hope this helps, and keep up the nice paint work!

Lokes are not really thru wire lures. They have wire inserts sandwiched between two halves. To make a thru wire lure you drill or slot the bait and insert or thread a wire all the way thru the lure. Thru wire construction means wire continues all the way thru the bait. My Talonz Deepthreat is a true thru wire bait . They are line drilled from end to end with hanger inserts installed and the wire threaded thru them. Heres a picture of one. Kingfisher

I picked up a book two weeks ago called Basic Fishing Lure Carving by Greg Hays. In it is a very detailed set of pictures and instructions on how to make a thru wire lure. I was able to follow the directions and able to do a pretty decent job on a through wire bait on my first try. Book was $14.95 at Woodcraft and well worth the investment.

I made the Bootleggers truly thru wire, and it was a fair amount of extra work for something that I doubt makes any difference in performance. (Pictures of it are still up on my website.) It does in that application reinforce the lip though. I still have to say that as a bait maker I like a good thru wire bait because I can appreciate the extra work. On all the other lures I've made with screw eyes over the years I am aware of none ever having a screw eye pull out, but its sort of like having chrome on your Harley...its not necessary, just cool.
