At the time of this report, the 2006 musky season is only 5 hours away from closing… and what a season it has been! Above average temperatures allowed us to stay on the water up until these, the final days. The past few weeks have seen several very nice muskies find their way into the bottom of our Frabill nets; fish up to 50 ½” have been caught and released in our area, with several very heavy fish in the upper forty inch range released as well. As usual for late fall, suckers rigged on quick-strike rigs produced action, as did deep diving crankbaits and rubber baits.

The walleye fishing continued to thrill anglers in pursuit of this tasty gamefish. Jig and minnow combinations as well as live-bait rigs worked in the deep holes and along the bottom of sharp breaklines have been the ticket for those willing to bare the elements. Fish in the ‘slot’ (20”-28”) have continued to put smiles on the faces of many area anglers.

As the temperature outside has already dipped to 15 degrees this evening, it’s time to begin looking to the fantastic action that can be found in our area. The Central WI area offers some tremendous early ice northern pike fishing, with legitimate trophies in the 40” plus range being caught each and every year. The walleye fishing is a favorite for many anglers with fish being caught on both tip-ups and jigging rods in the upcoming weeks. Although often overlooked during the first-ice window, some real slab crappies and bluegills are to be had as well. An exciting adventure also waits for the few who pursue channel catfish this time of year!

There are many people who spend a great deal of time traveling to distant locations in pursuit of fine whitetail deer hunting – those who do must not yet have had the chance to hunt here in Central Wisconsin. Local publications as well as websites dedicated to the outdoors here in our region are once again displaying some excellent trophy bucks that have fallen victim to the blade or bullet. We encourage you to give not only our waters a try, but our woods as well!
