Last warming trend we had here in MN pushed water temps up increasing fish activity and moved them shallow. Earlier this fall I had more action with colder, bad weather. What types of patterns have you found associated with warming trends in late fall?

LOL no responses - guess I'm the only one who's fishing still

You hit it,,,in early- midfall a cold snap gets em goin,,,Ive found in early-imid fall an actuall warm day that stalls falling watertemps actually shuts them down for a day or two,,,first frost of the year is usually a good day to be on the water,,in late fall sub 43 degree I havent made up my mind on warm days on if they hurt or help or just prolong the season

In the fall I like warm days when I can't be on the water to help extend the season. I haven't had a whole lot of success in those warming trends. Colder days are great for putting fish in the boat.

we've had some pretty moderate temperatures the last couple of weeks up in Vilas Co. I think the biggest suprise to me is that the actual water temps didn't come up as high as I thought they would have. .5º in two weeks isn't alot, not enough to make a huge differenece in activity.

This time of year the nights have greater influence than the days. Watch the average nightly low temps... to explain your water temp fluctuations. Its darker a lot longer than its light out this time of year..... so this warming trend simply slowed the cooling process... and not necessarily warmed the water temps.

Wish I had more late-fall experience to comment on the impact of these "warming trends".

In Tony Rizzo's books he maintains that next to steady rain in the late fall, warming temps that actually start to warm the water is the worst condition he has seen for catching fish.

Personally, I have no clue.

Just fish. I guess.

Marc,

My feeling is that warming trends late falls tend to spread the fish across the water column. I will contact fish both deep and shallow and it becomes a game to stay on them. I also feel that cooling trends in the fall tighten the area and make the fish easier to pattern. Hope this helps. I think you may be the Marc that fishes with a friend of mine who recently caught another big one with me. Is this correct?

The majority of my musky fishing is after labor day to ice up, from my records I find post turnover warm fronts/indian summer days are the toughest days to boat fish and/or establish any pattern. Those are typically the days my wife says "wow, must of been a great day on the water, it was a beautiful day!" I just shake my head and say "it sucked".

my feeling is that warming trends in fall are such crap shoots..one day can be gang busters, the next bunk...this week for example has been warming all week...monday was slow for those on the water...tuesday we had pretty good action..today was slow overall ...one off, one on, one off..same weather all 3 days..warming with southerly winds...
I do think the fish can be anywhere in the water column but I also think that is the same weather it's cold or warming...the water temps just don't warm up enough to make me think a musky says to itself.."wow, it's 60 out I better go up in 1 foot of water to bask in that .2 degree warmer water"
now, the day before the change I think is the time to be on the water...day of or before the next cold front during a warming trend in the fall..usually a good bet to get action...my 2 cents.

Looks like there will be no warm weather here past next Tuesday or Wednesday. The close of the season and solid ice up look to coincide this year in the North! Warm today, in the low 50's, then cooler tomorrow and by next Wednesday, highs in the teens.

What's your overall average from the Madison Chain this year? Looks to be pretty good, I'd guess!

Not sure what Brads is....SINCE HES OUT FISHING RIGHT NOW!!!

But, I will tell you this, the madison chain avg fish keeps getting bigger and bigger. I don't have the stats in front of me, but our club avg for madison chain muskies has grown every year for the last like 5 years. This is still a very young fishery....and a lot of the VERY FAT mid to upper 40 inch fish that are showing up with some consistency still have plenty of time to grow!! As you can see from Brads photos....this fish won't be stunted due to lack of forage!!

I would say the avg fish is between 36-42 inches....

Now the kicker....these lakes don't give them up easy!!! Sure you will crack the nut like we did this weekend....but I cuss these lakes more then I care to admit :-))
