Anyone know of any issues with this motor, I am looking at getting a boat with this motor on it. Thanks for any insight.

I have a '97 Johnson 90hp two-stroke. I know it's not a '99, but thought I'd pass along a nice little tid bit of info that I learned the hard way with my motor...which...may or may not apply to this one that you're questioning...but...just in case.

A while back, I kept having my alarm sounding on the dash while running wide open throttle (WOT) for a couple of minutes, it was telling me I was running "hot" or overheating.

Well..in fact I was not over heating and I was not running hot. It was the weirdest thing. In fact, the motor wasn't allowed to come up to full temp at all before that alarm would sound. I looked everything over myself using any type of common sense in regards to motors as I could then worked with a marina to trouble shoot this odd problem...when....really..there was never a problem really at all.

After a lot of research went into this, we stumbled on to the fact that the particular '97 year motor that is on my boat was one from the end of the production line of that '97 model year as they were beginning to phase in the '98 models. Not sure why...but there at the tail end of that '97 model production year...there was a thermostat change in the motor. My motor, for whatever reason, which still is beyond me, contains parts from the '98 model year motors and does not like a '97 model year thermostat at that temp range that those '97s operated within. My motor calls for a higher temp thermostat from the '98 model years.

So...all along, we had a '97 model year, lower temp thermostat in my motor and as the motor would wind up and warm up, then that thermostat would then be tripping the alarm on my dash.

Popped that higher operating temp thermostat in from the '98 model year, "problem" solved. No more problems. First time I've seen something like this.

It's one of those things..if it works...don't question it. LOL! The motor's been running and operating flawlessly since. Runs and starts like a champ all day long. Unfortunately...it smokes when cold and is loud....but...that's typical for two-strokes. I'm really missing my old four-stroke on my last boat. Would love to upgrade someday.

So...take that all for what it's worth. I just found that to be odd. Maybe someone can gain/learn something from that...
