Does anyone use the New model St Croix Premier 8ft MH? I am thinking about getting this rod as a bucktail rod and was looking for some feedback. Thanks!

I love mine! Great for bucktails and topwaters. I've only had it a few weeks and just got my first fish on it a few days ago, but its my favorite for the moment. Only time I put it down is when I'm throwing heavy stuff......Dawgs, Joes, big Jakes.........

This is my absolute favorite rod. The perfect bucktail rod IMO... and has enough backbone to handle pretty much any topwater or crankbait. I would definitely recommend this rod, and I think I would actually like to get a second one.

My favorite rod too. I throw everything but the heavy stuf with it. I put an old 6000C with a cranking handle and it is effortless fishing all day. I can't believe how much my figure eight catches went way up with an 8ft rod and i notice a huge difference between the 8 and 7'6"er. My 8ft avid H is in the garage right now just got it!

This rod is my work horse. Like Todd said, I throw everything on it but the heavy stuff (i.e. Mag Dawgs, etc), though it handles the reg. sized Bulldawgs just fine. The handle is nice and long (as are all the Premiers) making it very comfortable, depending on your height. It has great backbone and loads up very well with bucktails. Probably the best "all purpose" rod I've found. Plus, you get the advantage of deeper, and more importantly SMOOTHER, figure 8s and less stress on your lower back when doing 8s.

My .02 cents.

After my october rod breaking excursions, I needed to buy a rod and an 8fter. I went to gander mountian and picked up their guide series rod. I liked it. Then I picked up the st coix mh and compared. Action was about the same and the gander rod had one more guide. The gander 8'ter was half the price but then i compared the handles and realized the st croix was 2" longer on the butt end. Very important as I think the shorter handle would have dug into my side all day.

I try not to respond to these types of threads because it just looks like I am trying to get business but I will ask the question. If you like the Premier MH 8 footer but do not like the cork or guides, why not have it custom made? In most cases it can be about the same price as over the counter but you pick components, thread color, cork length and so on.

There now I look like a self promoter.

The St. Croix 8ft is my bread and butter rod, I pretty much use it for everything! In fact I have four of them! I'm a relatively short person, and I don't buy in to the old rule of buying a rod that fits your height. The longer the rod the better! With a long rod it is much easier to manipulate a bait, control a fish, get a better hookset, and get a deeper figure eight. I will go as far as saying 8ft is the absolute shortest I will ever buy a rod in the future. St. Croix is now making a 8'6" Tournament Musky Rod. I know custom rod builders such as www.professionaledgefishingrods.com will make even longer rods up to 9ft. I will be ordering one of the nine footers real soon. Don't get caught up in the old ideas of short musky rods, long rods are the wave of the future!

Listen to Keith at Professional Edge. It's not self promoting or bragging if it's the TRUTH. Keith Knows Muskie rods.

Joe Wishin

I'm not promoting anything. I've been Muskie fishing since 1972, owned a lot of good rods, Keith makes some of the best.
