| Anyone else pretty stoked to fish this weekend in the north woods? Full moon, cold water temps, ciscoes most likely shallow doing their thing at night? I'm takin Stealth Tackle Leaders J.Bette out saturday all day and as long as we can make it sat nite to try and find the elusive WI 5-0.

| Ok so for you die hard cisco spawn fishermen...if you think you know the area on the lake they might spawn, do you stay out as late as you can at night casting that area? What have you had the best luck with? I was thinking 10" jake slowly twitched/paused, Depthraider maybe, maybe even a big cowgirl slow cranked?
suggestions tips for trying to cast a little after dark this time of year...thanks |

If I'm not trolling after dark, I will be slow rolling a Triple X or cranking a 10" Slammer or Jake. |

| I will be trolling in WI. on Sat. nite and Sunday. The daylight hours will have a sucker or two hanging. Hey BN, I have great water that is trollable.......lots of ciscos too!! |

| Howie Meyer posted on his website yesterday that he doesn't think the waters are cold enough yet to start the ciscoes spawning. he predicted the weekend of the 11th would be more likely - and that's up in Presque Isle, further north than most people go.
might want to still be targeting pre-spawn staging areas?

I can only hope, that will be the next weekend I'm heading north.
Brad, I also read that during the actually spawning of cisco, the area get's pretty intense and you'll find some suicide spawning cisco stuck to your bait as they try to "get' with it. Try tossing some wild colors to gain the muskies attention, not the cisco... |

| Howie and Adam also suggested that they have better luck during the actual spawn by getting right tight to shore and casting OUT. they said they encounter aggressive muskies doing this, whereas they tend to get lazy follows if working outside casting in.

| With the cold temps I would venture to guess some of the smaller under say 800 acre lakes with cisco's might get them going this weekend..the water temps on those lakes are at 40 or under now, with the moon, it could happen... bigger lakes might be a bit yet...Even if it doesn't happen, action should be good this weekend regardless if they spawn or not... |

Location: Oconto Falls, WI | I am anticipating the weekend of Nov 11 as well. Perhaps I should say HOPING! I will not be on the water this coming weekend. Some of the cisco waters around Phelps last weekend were still at 45-46°, and I hadn't even found any staging cisco's.
You never do know though until you look. Apparently ciscos on different bodies of water spawn at different times (article by dan Craven in Esoz Angler). Water temps are much more improtant than the full moon. Like Brad said though, some of the smaller lakes with ciscos may be going. |

I've seen cisco start staging loooong before they do their deed.... and during the daylight hours its the staging activity you want to target anyway, right? I have very little experience night fishing during the spawn... so can't comment on that potential opportunity.
And.... I have had very good success this time of year fishing perceived staging areas even when NO CISCOS WERE PRESENT. Not sure what that means.... other than to not get too caught up in the "baitfish connection".
I'll be up north this weekend.... and like many others, hoping to encounter lots of staging ciscos.... but truthfully all those ciscos seem to do for me is increase my own confidence and not necessarily my success rate.

| I would agree JLong...I spent 3 or 4 weekends in a row last Oct/Nov in northern WI on mainly cisco lakes and I found fish up to 47" every time out...and mostly NOT even close to where I think they spawn..sure a few were near there but most were just on classic good fall spots..deep underwater rocky points, steep breaks, etc...now I know I did see one boat camped out near where I think they spawn on one lake and they had a succesful weekend but I caught or had just as many hits fishing the areas that just looked fishy...on one particular point there didnt have to be baitfish on it, but the muskies were always there...I've come to name one spot, Guarantee Point since last fall...
I'm not saying I'm going to camp on cisco spawning areas, and I would think it would be smart for those going up not to camp on those spots either...I do however want to try some nite fishing as I did get one 40+ fish on a dawg after dark last fall near a likely spawning area...if my line doesn't freeze up that is...
be safe for sure...if you don't have a buddy in the boat to yank you back in it when you fall out have a rope dragging behind...

I am in agreement with both of you...as far as spawning areas for cisco's, tullibee, and the like, make sure you're fishing them. I am a believer that night fishing is good, but I wouldn't put it at "better" than fishing during the day. Although we don't night fish on eagle, late in the fall we used to go to Canyon, Indian Chain, Cliff, etc., and fish the staging baitfish school, during the day, AND after dark. I fished the same areas on Georgian Bay after dark. I would say that if you've got what it takes, DO IT after dark....you never know! As far as better fishing in the staging areas, versus the non-staging areas, I'd rather fish where I KNOW they are going to be, than to fish where I THINK they might be.
As far as baits, I think slow rolling a BIG bucktail is a great idea. As well, ripping/pulling Jakes/Grandma's is also a great idea. But an overlooked way that used to catch BIG muskies back in the 80's, was straight retrieving a black or white Big Joe. I remember casting those bad boys after dark up on North Twin, Trout, White Sand, and a few other cisco based lakes. THEY WORK!

Landing will freeze....you can do one of two things. 1.) Go back every two hours, stick your butt end into the landing areas, and run your motor. 2.) Just drive through the thin layer of ice that will have built up....it won't be much!

| For sure Donnie..the big joes will get wet this weekend as well...a straight 2-4cranks then pause of 2-3 seconds and repeat is a good tactic on steep rocky or sandy breaks this time of year...
Joes, Dawgs, 9" GMa, 10" jake, Triple D, Swim Shad, Magnum Real fish sucker, Draider, Ernies, all of these are great picks this time of year
Can't wait to get up there this weekend...Bette and I are looking forward to some clickers ssssssssingin......

| it was pretty slow for my boat this weekend...got a 39 and 41, and lost 2...we were on pretty low density waters but hoping for a shot at a really big one...did see a pic of a fat 48 that came off the lake we were on Saturday...so we knew they were there..
ciscos we saw were tightly packed ..right off steep rocky breaks..did see some muskies busting thru them eating some...
I think on most lakes it will be a bit yet before they spawn
I think JLong and JJ boated at least a few on the Mani...i know 2 were right at 40..not sure about the others...
