This is a picture of a monster of the deep sea, now this was taken with one hand on the camera and one hand holding the rod. I want to know what you think this fish measured, now you can copy and blow this thing up or anything you want to do to get an as acurate of an estimate as to just how long this fish was.

Here is what you need to know, you can see the entire fish and that the tail is down a little bit. The lure in her face is a 15" custom lure that is partialy missing because of my sleave getting in the picture, and the white you see is it's underbelly. Now I can tell you that the red spot ( the first thing you see is hook marks ) you see on the under belly of the lure is 5.5 inches form the tail end on the lure and also that you can see less then 2/3 of the lure.

It is easy to see that it has some huge girth as well but the lenght is what is astonishing but you can guess on both the lenght and girth.

Now I want to hear from the experts on this one so take your time and try to be as acurate as possible.

Anyone who has seen this lure will tell you it is all of 15" and 1" thick and up to 3" high.

Thanks to all for their efforts.

Richard....is that one of your monster trolling lures?? Man if that lure is over a foot long the fish is truly a monster.....for better minds than mine to analyse, though.

If I had to guess, I would estimate that it was 55-59" Long with a 25-29" Girth.

Tough to predict, for all I know that is a Husky Jerk in it's mouth and it's 34" long.... jk

Great fish, looks like a giant if the measurements on the lure are accurate.

It appears to be about 5 and a half times the size of the lure. That puts that fish at 82.5 inches!! That is one hell of a fish.

But, the lure is beneath the fish which makes the fish look bigger. It all depends on how far the lure is under the fish. I would guess that the fish is about 48 inches, but only because I think this is a trick question.

No trick question here Scott, the lure is 15 inches long but only 10 inches show in the picture, the front third is covered by the sleave of my raincoat. The tail hook was in the corner of the fishes mouth so you can see the tip of the lure is right where it meets the fish. [:sun:]

61.5". Can't even venture a guess on the girth. Any way I try to figure it, it's a great fish.

Musta been fun!

I know im right in saying its bigger than any muskie I have ever caught. I did some measuring and came up with 85.5 inches. now in my mind if that was true we all would of heard of this fish. So I am going to venture a guess of 54.75 inches based on the distance between the lower fins.

Oh by the way I am absoulty not even close.

I don't know if my opinion counts with my experience...but...I don't have a clue at what the full length of the fish is. From the tip of the mouth to the end of the gill plate has to be about 20" If that is somewhat correct, the fish has to be atleast mid 60"

MJB

P.S. You've seen more monster fish then most all of us (on the board) combined, Richard, whats your opinion.

If it is 5.5" from the red spot on the lure to the end of the lure the fish is definitely over 50 inches. True, fish do look much larger IN the water, but this fish is ON the surface of the water - with almost a third of it's lenght right on the surface of the water...

EASILY over 50",

I think mid to upper 50 inches....

will somebody please tell me the answer....

I did the gazontas in Photoshop with the ole ruler and a little math and came up with 80" or so give or take a few inches because of the fish being curled at the tail and it's tough to tell where the tail ends. That seems pretty crazy for the size, but I would have to say that some of that measurement would be thrown off since the fish is closer to the camera than lure. Thus, it would give it a paralax shift to the overall proportion of the fish to the lure. Never-the-less it's quite an impressive fish. Richard are you sure that the lure is indeed 5.5" from the red spot to the tail? If everything is legit and you feel that it clearly explains the size of that fish. Than you've got yourself one hell of a whopper!!!

catch ya later,
Krappie

Richard,
Looks like a great fish! I'm bad at estimates, but if that lure is 15"s, and I believe it is,
it looks like a J.S. Wobbler. Am I correct?
congrats!!![:)] [:)]

Nice fish, I guess it at 45-48 inches. Just from seeing many fish, and the body shape I would guess from 28-30lbs. Nice fish and I am sure with the water you fish you will do better, but hell of an effort anywhere in the country. Congrats...Ben
p.s. if it was truly a giant fish I hope you would get some stats for us, seeing as though it was probably fall and the fish was safe. So how big do you think it was??? Be well, Ben

It's hard to really say being that we can't see this fish in three dimensions but my guess would be 48 - 50 inches

Hey Ben Reamer how ya doing? Where have you been hiding ?

I'd go 55-57" based on the 5" nose to spot measurement.
She's a big girl.

Hi,
If your details are coorect it is a pig. I don't knoe exactly why but I am thinking your going to lay one on us and tell us the fish is about 40 inches. I Hope you let you let us know what it was.

I'm gonna guess that its exactly 50". I just trying to be different. Looks like a huge fish, but a fish in the water always is different than what most think.

I believe comparing the picture to the picture in the other post that the fish is 48.5X24.5 I think they are the same fish. Just a hunch.

I'm going to have to say an easy 72", but I think it resembles a killer whale more so than a muskie. OK, is that enough a** kissing? TM, call Loomis now, you know what I am talking about!!

At first I thought I was looking at a picture showing me a musky that someone had caught. After looking closer I realized that it was a picture showing us how little we can judge size from a picture, at least with such few "supporting" details.

I have no idea of the actual lenght, but it looks to be an impressive fish.

Gotta go. I'm going to dig out my digital camera and take a few pictures before the wife gets home. We'll see how accurate she can judge lenght from a picture!!!!!! [:p]

Joel...whatever you do never put anything but a musky beside a 15" lure....

Trophy, nice fish. I would guess that that fish is somewhere between 45 to 47 inches. Keeping in mind that fish look bigger in the water, hope you let us know what it was,my hunch is its going to be smaller than i thought. I think this post was a great idea, thanks for the challenge.

I have looked at this twice. From my best guess on this... The head is 12" to back of the gill. I started adding up that length down the fish....and came up with 54".

But I would rather meet her at person.

OK here is the scoop, and no this was not a tricked question. It was truly a fish of a lifetime that just happened to be caught when I was alone. The reason I asked for help is that I am not even sure just how big she was.

First of all the guy who made the lure asked me if I had a photo of his lure with the fat 49 incher I caught on his lure on my first pass with it, and this happened to be my first pass exactly 1 week later same run just in the other direction when this beast was caught. So that is the only reason I have that picture.

Now for it's size well I am not sure LOL you see this 15" lure came with 7/0 hooks and I hand released all my fish back then so I had no net or gaff. So I landed her and had her in my grip and got the plyers out and removed the hook from the corner of her mouth. I grabbed my tailors tape and stretched it almost as far as my hands would allow and I got 55 inches without a tail pinched. Now I got the tape around her girth and she decided to go back down to where she belongs. I was definatly not going to hold onto her thats for sure.

So I reported her as a 55 x 26 but stronly believe her to be a few inches bigger on both measurements but will leave her at that. Now remember I have caught many 54 inchers so I know she was much longer.

Now my normal procedure for a big fish is to re-measure the lenght using my tape but in 2 halfs, first I measure from tip of mouth to the dorsal fin then from the dorsal to the end of the pinched tail and add the two. Best way to get an acurate measurement when alone as it's impossible to hold the tape at her mouth and try and read the other end some 50+ inches away even a floating stick won't work.

If only you guys knew the size of that lure, man I wish I had my digital to post a pic of it. I will someday get a pic of it next to it's little cousin the 10" Jake.

Thanks for the assesments and the good guesses I got.

I wish you all one just like her in 2002. [:sun:]
