My friends have had a lot success on river systems lately, many 3-4-5 fish days, but the water temp has dropped almost 20 degrees in 2 weeks. The water temp on the river is 38 degrees right now. Is there a temp where I should forget the river and hit the lakes?

Thanks,

I'll fish the river until it freezes, or the season closes. Which ever comes first.

If the river flows into a lake, move into the warmer water in the lake.

I've been told:

Once a river fisherman, ALWAYS a river fisherman.....

Once a lake fisherman, NEVER a river fisherman.

personally, i'd rather fish a river..a bona fide river...not a flowage, or anything like that.

If you plan on getting into river fishing, get the dan gapen river fishing books (do a google search)...even though he doesn't focus on muskies all that much, i gleaned a lot of helpful info from both books that i read.

There is an uptick in activity that takes place due to several factors(runs of different forage species that muskies take advantage of) on rivers that I don't see as timed and actual on the lakes.

My favorite time to fish rivers is in the low 40's / upper 30's. Fish are easy to find and continue to feed all winter as long as there is open water. I have caught fish with ice coming down the river. The key is hitting the feeding windows right which is never an exact science!!
